Running Alaska (Interview of of Palin on her running/fitness routine)
WSJ Magazine (The Magazine from the WallStJournal) ^ | 09/06/08 (Fall 2008) | interview by Jen Murphy

Running Alaska: For Sarah Palin, a marathoner, mother of five and the first female governor of Alaska, running has always been a family affair—and a critical distraction.

As the state’s youngest governor ever, and the first woman to hold state office in Alaska, Sarah Palin, 45 years old, is weathering her state’s recent unsavory political storms with plenty of head-clearing exercise. Palin, who took office in December 2006, has always been a runner. Her parents were marathoners and high school track and cross-country coaches. “Running was a family affair,” she says. “I didn’t have much choice. Thankfully, I’ve never tired of it.” Palin, a mother of five kids, ages 4 months to 19 years, says exercise is still very much a “family thing.” She and her husband, Todd, also an athlete, named their first son Track because he was born in that sport’s season. Palin (above, near Mendenhall Glacier, outside of Juneau) and her family live in Wasilla, about 45 miles north of Anchorage.

Workout

“Conventional running is my sanity,” Palin says. Having recently given birth to her fifth child, the governor is trying to get back to her old workout routine. She was running 7 to 10 miles almost every day but switched to aerobics classes at her gym when she became pregnant. She has worked her way back up to running three miles every other day.

In the summer, when it’s always light, she’ll sometimes run as late as midnight. In the dead of winter, when it’s dark, she sneaks in an afternoon run, or else grudgingly runs on the treadmill at home or at the gym in the evening. Palin keeps dumbbells at home, but she says most of her upper body strength comes from snowmobiling with her family.

This is in the magazine that comes with today's weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal. Obviously written before she was selected as VP.

I wonder if the Secret service has runners who will be able to keep up with her?

She's an athlete.

Here is the best part, and kind of where the campaign is going. Palin and McCain fill a big hall in Sterling Heights Michigan with thousands of cheering people. Meanwhile, Joe Biden (does anybody remember Joe?) is visiting a middle school in Pennsylvania. A middle school? Lots of voters there, Joe.

Runnin' at midnight. Pumpin' iron. Upper body strength. Sarah...I'm crazy for you.

The media slant for Obama has been ridiculous. Do you remember the stories a few weeks ago about “Is Obama Too Fit to be President”? Although it was an obvious rhetorical question, the fact is he's a skinny little smoker. When President Bush was first elected, he was running, I believe, consistent 5 minutes miles. He was 6’ 1” and 180 pounds. They never said anything about him being too fit to be president. Now we have a marathon runner as potential vice president. I'm sure the main stream press will ask the same question of her as they asked of Obama.

You are limiting yourself here... you see kids... Democrats see voters... If they can figure out a way for Lazarus to vote in South Dakota... getting a child to vote is a snap...

Metaphorically, Sarah Palin is in the race for the long-haul. Obama is already beginning to choke and wheeze. He’ll be winded and stumbling along soon enough.

It’s not their intent to get the child to vote.

They want to fool the public into ‘sympathy’ for appearing in public school. I seem to hear about appearances at schools by Dems, only when it is prior to some election.

And.... if your skills are limited, it might benefit your chances to work with an ‘easier’ audience, knowing the pull those children can have later on their parents.

Wow—was just thinking the same thing! She’s got the grit and stamina for the long run—and she’s going to need every ounce of it. Of course, I think she also has the wisdom and humility to understand where the Strength she needs the most comes from, and we’re not talkin’ ‘bout a gubmint subsidy!
