The Republican presidential candidate will make his running mate the public face of the country's drive for energy independence, according to a McCain campaign official.
Mr McCain, whose selection of Mrs Palin has electrified Republican supporters, wants to capitalise on her expertise in the oil and gas sector while governor of Alaska. He believes that her record of taking on oil company chiefs will help convince the public that his government would not be in the pocket of energy fat cats, a perception that has damaged George W.Bush's poll ratings.
The move would give Mr McCain political cover to resume widespread domestic drilling for oil, even in areas of environmental fragility.
Mrs Palin backs drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), which Mr McCain has previously opposed. Should he decide to reverse that position he will use Mrs Palin to make the case that it is necessary.

Excellent move!
Yay! Great move.
Very good , very smart. I highly recommend McCain let’s her tackle lots of things in his adm.
And those place exist where? I'm still waiting for a list from the eco-nuts that doesn't have the whole world listed as fragile
I suspect Sarah has an answer to the Libs' "but, but, what about the caribou?"
Caribou burgers.
Fox just showed the Obambi basically yelling at a crowd that McCain can’t bring change and must think the American people are stupid. He sounds very shrill; the crowd is very quiet.
First order of business, start moving on the ANWR drilling project.
Obama was kind of “shrill”. Maybe he needs a week off in Hawaii.
Call the EMT’s. The environmental whackos just had a heart attack.
I picked up on that as well. The anger is showing through on his face.
“The Republican presidential candidate will make his running mate the public face of the country’s drive for energy independence”
We may see oil drop on that statement, alone.
Washed-up Messiahs are not a pretty sight. Best not to stare and point as the thing withers away.
Excellent. I’m sure we all believed that this would be a major part of their strategy when he picked her, but its good to see confirmation of it.
Palin is also an excellent political player, very smart, and more decisive than we’ve seen in a top political figure in some time.
She will bring finely honed instincts to our national indecision on energy alternatives. It is an area begging for true leadership, while enviros bring us nothing but confusion and infighting.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALL RIGHT!!
I approve of the move!
Sarah Palin has opened so many possibilities for the future of the nation, John McCain’s future (acknowledged by his own group he needs expertise in some areas), and the recognition of a talented and intelligent woman who will do honor to any assignment given.
Can it be possible we see the prosperity of success ahead?
I know for a fact that Sarah has perked up my energy in the base.
Go Sarah.
Or he could bring Michelle out.
