When someone says that, they are signalling that they are leading up to an important statement. He drew a lot of attention to the gaffe/"Freudian slip" which followed.
At any rate, he's a lawyer; so, "alleged" should be an easy word for him to add to any conversation.
To be effective at penetrating Liberal Mind Fog, any criticism of Obama's statements must be both compelling and honest. Providing full context to fairly just Obama's Muslim comment would make it not be terribly compelling. Failure to provide context would be dishonest.
But even your (sensible enough) explanation of his anti-gun position required more thought than one can usually expect to convey in a 10 second sound byte, which is I fear the median attention span of potential voters.
Very little explanation would be needed. Show his statement that he's not going to take people's guns away, do a brief cutaway to a slide or something with text and voice over "Oh really"? Then cut back to his "Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't have the votes in Congress". Back to cutaway/voice over: "So you don't think you'd succeed, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't try."
Probably about 15 seconds total, and it would get the point across just fine. If the ad contained a link to the full video from which the statement was taken, people with LMF might go there to see how badly the evilNastyRepublicans were distorting Obama's words. They'd see for themselves that putting those words from Obama in context didn't improve them.

Presidents who make mistakes cause innocent lives to become lost. Obama is a mistake in, and of, himself.

Obama is a lawyer. Can you imagine him in the courtroom before a jury making such a slip, like saying, I will prove that my client is guilty.
