Drawing a Bead on the Press (NYT being fair to Palin?)
NYT ^ | 9/7/08 | David Carr

Posted on 09/08/2008 12:04:38 PM PDT by Clint N. Suhks

Before Gov. Sarah Palin came flying in from the wilds of Alaska for the Republican convention in St. Paul, there was a lot of sniggering in media rooms and satellite trucks about her beauty queen looks and rustic hobbies, and the suggestion that she was better suited to be a calendar model for a local auto body shop than a holder of the second-highest office in the land.

Ms. Palin, unwilling to be rendered as a caribou-skinning cartoon, stepped to the microphone on Wednesday and punched back.

“I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone,” she said.

“But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators,” she continued. “I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion — I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country.”

When she was announced as John McCain’s running mate, I told my wife that the governor had no idea what was about to hit her. By the time she was done speaking, I realized the reverse was precisely true as well.

She was a huge hit in the room and beyond. Ms. Palin, a woman who clearly understands the power of words, had a way of pronouncing media — “MEE-de-ah” — that made it sound like something legless and slithering.

Taking a whack at the media is a well-thumbed page in the convention playbook — and with 15,000 of us on hand at both conventions, it’s tough to resist. But while Ms. Palin may be unfamiliar to the hosts of Sunday morning political shows and to readers of the letters page of The Washington Post, to readers...

If she’s the first female vice president in the country’s history, doesn’t Vogue magazine have to give her the full cover treatment? And that raises another question: is it O.K. to wear fur as long as you killed the animal yourself?

Best line I've heard yet. LOL!

Unfortunately, the negative articles will far out-weigh the positive.

Or, perhaps that is “fortunately.” Hmm...

The more the MSM beats her up the more women’s vote she’ll get.

Mau-Mauing MSM headline:

Alaska: Heavy snows; hundreds could be dead, say reports
Palin Ignores Plight, Continues to Campaign

is it O.K. to wear fur as long as you killed the animal yourself?

No, you have to eat the animal, too.

It actually wasn't a bad article...given the fact it was written by an elitist. I'll give credit where credit's due: Carr was fair in his writing here.

...But it really amazes me how some in the Elite World are so utterly clueless...like Bonnie Fuller, who seems to think Palin's stances on Life, Evolution, and the Second Amendment won't appeal to a wider base of voters (Translated: The Elite Left Coasts, or the Quotations like Laura Ingraham referred to the geographical arena of largely Democratic voters, won't like her, no matter how great she looks in Prada).

First, a confession - I have all the characteristics of the elites, but, thankfully, none of the politics. So please pardon my ignorance when I ask if those fish are supposed to look like that. They haven’t been doctored to appear splattered with blood, have they?

Second, if I were to go fishing, I’m pretty sure my hair wouldn’t be as shiny as that. Heavy sigh.

Ms. Fuller questioned whether that appeal will endure once voters become equally familiar with her antiabortion, pro-creationism politics.

Interesting question. I think it will help far more than it hurts. Now is as good a time as any to find out.

Ms. Palin’s prism of God, Alaska and Country, in that order, obscures an irony. When 17-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears, Britney’s sister, shows up pregnant, it becomes one more example of permissiveness gone amok. But array those same circumstances over 17-year-old Bristol Palin, and it is received at the convention as one more example of steadfast prolife values...When it comes to the culture wars, it all depends on where the baby bump lands.

We may be trying to equate something that isn't exactly an equation.

A decent article, in the lump that is. I don't see it lasting from any organization run by someone named Pinch.

“I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion — I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country.”

I've seen this line quoted several times in just this way. However, this is NOT the way she delivered the line. She said "this GREAT country" at the end of this statement. I don't understand why she keeps being quoted without that word. Either (1) the inclusion of that word makes her sound too patriotic for leftist media, or (2) that word wasn't in the prepared transcript that the campaign provided to the media and Palin included it on her own at the last minute. The reporters may write stories based on the prepared transcript rather than the actual remarks.

“In the press galleries at the convention, journalists wrinkled their noses in disgust when Piper, Ms. Palin’s youngest daughter, was filmed kitty-licking her baby brother’s hair into place.”

Heartless liberal snobs....

I think those are spawning salmon. I have never seen that in person, but on discovery and national geographic channels I have seen them running, and I think that is just a characteristic of spawning salmon. They get torn all to heck returning to their spawning grounds.

Not 100% sure... but better than 90%.

re: is it O.K. to wear fur as long as you killed the animal yourself?

Yes, but you have to have eaten the flesh of the animal too. Just killing it for its fur would be bad, but killing to eat and then using the fur for clothing is acceptable.

Who was the comedian years ago that did a bit about the life guard at the local beach who would tell you how long you had to wait before going back in the water? He had all sorts of silly rules about ketchup, pickles, etc. Sounded like an early Monty Python routine.

Are you sure this the REAL NEW YORK TIMES?

Still smiling over this line “If she’s the first female vice president in the country’s history, doesn’t Vogue magazine have to give her the full cover treatment? And that raises another question: is it O.K. to wear fur as long as you killed the animal yourself”?
