Minnesota Poll: Obama, McCain are dead even in state

By BOB VON STERNBERG, Star Tribune

September 13, 2008

Minnesota has become a battleground in a presidential campaign that has dramatically tightened nationwide.

A new Star Tribune Minnesota Poll shows that the race is now a dead heat between Barack Obama and John McCain, each supported by 45 percent of likely voters in the state.

The new poll likely will stoke both sides' efforts during the final 51 days until the election, triggering a barrage of advertising, grass-roots politicking and, potentially, stepped-up visits by the candidates.

The poll found that McCain has made gains across the board since a May Minnesota Poll that showed him trailing by 13 points. He has picked up considerable support among men and to a lesser degree among women. He also has boosted his standing with whites, young voters and all levels of household income and education.

Hockey is really big in this state. That might help some.

What I find interesting is these mid-west and rust belt polls constantly show either a tie or McCain behind by 3 points.

IF this is true, if Minnesota is even remotely close let alone tied or McCain up you are looking at a full scale route in this election.

Election night won’t be about will McCain win, it will be about HOW MANY SEATS WILL REPUBLICANS GAIN, or HOW BIG A MAJORITY WILL THEY HAVE WHEN VOTING ENDS.

it was only 2 pts in 2004. WI was only 1 pt.

And Pawlenty is fairly popular. Add in possible coattails from Coleman, the effect of having the conventin there, etc...

I’m not saying I think McCain will win it, but these states are clearly a bit closer than most probably picture them

Bottom line is if MN and WI remain this close, McCain will win even if he loses them. If the Republican is this close in those states, that means he’s comfortably ahead in the states he really needs to have

Good. Lots of hockey moms, dads, & kids in MN.

Yes, that’s right...and Unions. And being a pretty liberal state...they must be open to our woman and giving her a chance. I just would have never thought we would have been in play for Minnesota. NICE!! Now if this can just trickle down to a defeat of Al Franken......ugh

Exactly, Fauxbama should have this state locked up.. if this state is tied, or the dem is only polling at a slight lead here, come election night, you are looking at a full scale route of the democrats, not just a republican victory for the white house.

If Minn turns red, then that means McCain just won a huge landslide.

I think one thing coning into play here is the fact that most people are just starting to pay attention to the election.

We’ve seen all of the damaging information about Barry, and it’s beyond the realm of belief why anybody would vote for this Marxist/Communist/Racist based on the facts.

Barry, you know what, the people of this country are waking up and the chickensssssssssssss, are coming home to roost.

Your veil of lies and deceit is being ignited just like the American flags those terrorists you support burn.

Rasmussen had Obama only up by 4 points in MN on August 13th.

So it would not be unsual for the state to be tied today due to the convention bounce.

I’ll take it as good news but I don’t think McCain will actually win MN. I hope to God they’re going to pour ads and Palin into New Mexico, that one is a must.

Just a thought here . . . if I was a local newspaper and I wanted to attract some campaign money to my state, I would do a poll and say the status is dead even.

Better we see this from Gallup, Ras or Zogby before celebrating.

Wisconsin may actually be the voter fraud capital of the Western Hemisphere. McCain needs at least 60% in order to win, and that may not be enough.

I think we’re tied in Minnesota right now because we just had our convention there. Same thing as to why Colorado is tied, when we should be up in that state. Assuming McCain is 2-3 points ahead of Obama nationwide, I think we should be 2-3 points ahead in Colorado, and they should be 2-3 points ahead in Minnesota.

On the other hand, I can be persuaded that Palin has strengthened our ticket (relative to 2004) in the northern tier of states. She’s has a distinctive, Canadian like accent, and she and her husband love the outdoors when it is cold. It is not unreasonable to think this will animate a lot of people in the northern tier of the country, from Duluth to Spokane, and maybe all the way west to Seattle.
