ABC News: Deal May Be Dead: Democrats Blaming McCain
ABC News ^ | September 25, 2008 | Jake Tapper, Charles Herman and Z. Byron Wolf

Posted on 09/25/2008 4:40:18 PM PDT by Zakeet

After days of intense bipartisan negotiations and meetings today at the White House, the deal to bail out staggered investment banks may be dying amid partisan finger-pointing.

Republicans blame Democrats. Democrats blame Republicans, and a key Democrat even pointed a finger at Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain.

House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank, D-Mass., told Democratic colleagues that McCain's sudden heightened involvement in the negotiations has destroyed chance of an agreement, sources told ABC's George Stephanopoulos.

Frank compared McCain's involvement to "Richard Nixon blowing up the Vietnam peace talks in 1968."

Wait, 1968? I was there then, I don’t remember any peace talks....

You know, repeating that actually works for me. I could see:

“Democrats: John McCain killed $700 billion welfare payment to Wall Street millionaires.”

all day!

Woohoo...new meeting just announced. Let the adults run things this time and I predict McCain will be able to announce a deal before Bush’s bedtime...

No bailout! I don't care who's running the meetings.

You know, the reality is that this headline does, in fact help McCain a lot. The general population—including many Dems—are opposed to the bailout as currently proposed, so the headline could simply be read by them as “Bailout deal you hate is killed by McCain”. They don’t realize that this is a plus for him. That said, while I don’t like what’s now being proposed for the bailout, I do think something has to be done. I like the insurance concept that the House reps proposed today—I have to assume that McCain had a hand in that since he’s been talking with all of them since day before yesterday.

This is akin to a boil and McCain just lanced it and now the pus is seeping out and it stinks to high hell.

Keep burning up the switchboard in Washington folks. No bailout! Call like the future of our country depends on it - it does.

McCain just played his ace. Screw you Repubs.

Rob Emmanual about to go bizerk on MSNBC in a few minutes.

This is showing how great a Pres McCain would be.

Face it, we are down to crunch time on this bill and he has the guts to say NO.

They don't understand what the real problem is

That's because no one is talking about the structural problems in the investment world, and what structural changes have to start taking place. All they are hearing is "no loans available, fix that with Dr. Paulson's potion today!!"

If what the economy suffers from is stage III melanoma, then a spritz of Bactine won't do any good. Only immediate surgery will help.

But if we have only a big, nasty looking mole, there's time to check it out and get a second opinion.

Thanks for your insight :) It makes more sense to me- but that’s cause I like the principles.

Neil Cavuto was very calm earlier when talking with Shep- said when there’s this kind of pressure bad decisions are made..and he doesn’t think the world will end if we take a little time to work this through...

“Also, if people have not put any money down then they really are not going to “lose” their houses because in reality they were simply “renting” - what exactly have they LOST????”

Spot on. Maybe those whom have lost their homes whom came in with a down payment, but should have never qualified (no thanks to Frank) we help out with a Tax credit over the next five years.

Those whom are managing to hold onto their house but should never have qualified, the Gov should give a higher percentage of Mortgage deduction on their taxes for a few years.

In return I'd like capital gains for individual citizens go to Zero for a few years while we are paying off Barney's Sins. Corps a 20% reduction for the next few years

Send me in Coach

I especially loved Obamessiah’s press conference this evening. I’ll summarize:

“This isn’t the time to take credit or blame. ...

“This was going fine until presidential politics were injected into it with Senator McCain. ...

“We were near a deal. The president, the Democrats, and the Senate Republicans had fundamentally agreed, but the House Republicans had some objections to the core principles. ...”

Yeah, The One is totally above the fray, here. No blame thrown whatsoever.

And I find it telling how standing up for the Constitution and for freedom, capitalism, and liberty is something that angers Democrats so much. Well, as if we really needed to be told!

Did you see him last night on FOX after Bush’s speech?

I was stunned the dims sent him out to give the opp version. Typical finger pointing drivel which I expected but he’s such a buffoon. If ever there was a time the American people needed to be re-assured, or at least flim flammed, by their congress it was last night.

They didn’t even bother.

This is too perfect for this attempted communist takeover. And it's a legitimate Despair.com poster, too!

Considering its perfection, I think I just may buy this one. Heck, maybe each politician needs this tattooed on their foreheads.

And I also blame Henry Paulson, Bernacke, and President George W. Bush.

“This must be trumpeted loud and clear. Bailout or no, the Dems cannot be allowed to railroad the thing then claim that a failure to reach agreement is McCain’s fault.”

Your so right and the GOP is losing this argument. The democrats are all over TV attempting to blame McCain the ‘conservative republicans’. If the GOP doesn’t get some spokesman on TV with the appropriate talking points they will lose this battle and quickly.

Anyone watching Lou Dobbs? His whole hour was really good, with Ed Rollins and two others (one Dem shill)—but Dobbs really laid it out plainly why the American people should not get behind the bailout without MUCH more information being given them as to what the problems are that need fixing—and how Paulson et al plan to do that.

Barney Frank needs to admit that this is largely his fault and that he will be retiring at the end of the month.
