Mach 5 refers to 5 times the speed of sound.

Yes...which is FAR slower than a particle beam or maser/laser weapon. Speed helps a missile evade interception, but DEWs remove that advantage except for targeting considerations.

Does this mean that if the Russian Army isn’t able to get the missiles to work properly that they’ll have to get on the telephone with “technicians” from Calcutta?

LOL!!! The Russians are doomed!

Hypersonic is Mach five.

“It doesn’t even work until MACH 7.”

Some of them work at slower speeds, i.e., Mach 5. The ones they tested many years ago were more in this range.

Mach 15 might be theoretically possible but all of the problems at Mach 5 are even more challenging, especially the heat issue. I can’t imagine anyone spending the money and time required to make it work, and I doubt the Russians and Indians will, either.

"Yes, we're gonna have to go right to ludicrous speed."

Just need to explode some chaff in front of it. The kinetic energy will take it out. Also, can’t out run a laser. -

“Bullet speed” is one thing. Reaction time to incoming missile is another. If defense system has only several seconds to detect, calculate, target and fire then ... you can “out run” a laser.

Exactly. It takes a lot, lot, lot of horsepower to go mach 5 and horsepower takes fuel. If I remember correctly, that is the speed of the X15 which had one million HP and could fly for a minute or two.

Me thinks the Ruskies and Indies have hired Bagdhad Bob for their PR releases.

Check out the YAL-1.

It can hit things far faster than MACH 5.

Intercontinental missile can not change its course during initial stage of flight that gives you time to target. Anti-ship cruise missile perform “evasive maneuvers near to the target to defeat any defenses” and that makes targeting (and keeping beam on target for several seconds) very difficult.

I think we hit a pretty fast target when we took out that errant satellite. I don’t think their MACH 2.5 measures up to that.
