The Saginaw home that hit the housing market at a cut-rate price sold for less than the price of a McDonald's value meal.
The abandoned home on 1606 Perkins received eight bids on eBay.com and sold for $1.75 Wednesday evening.

Me, too. Is the south and Alaska the last sane places in this country? I guess Alaska isn’t very sane anymore since the leftists descended on it.
Up here in Michigan I have been watching an interesting trend...well perhaps not a trend, say a minor social miracle. People in the suburbs of Detroit who have been hit hard by job and home loss have been moving back into the city. It seems they need some sort of anchor, in this case a Catholic church that has weathered the great flight out of the city, but they are now willing to give Detroit a chance. Yes, they give it a chance out of desperation but then that is sometimes how real change happens, tentatively. Most of the homes, well built for cold winters, can be had for the price of the taxes or for under $10,000. Homes that would sell anywhere else in suburban Detroit for 100,000 to 150,000 dollars, (not now perhaps but less than a year ago), are being purchased and fixed up. I hope this phenomena continues. Detroit gets slammed all the time but there are still great people in this beleaguered city who work hard and try to improve their neighborhoods.
I think every state has some sensible areas. My brother and his wife live in a cold, but normal, area of western Pennsylvania, for example. (I don’t like cold, but my sister-in-law is British, and they both like to ski.)
I really liked the firebase idea, though, PapaBear. My teenagers would go for it!
Being from Michigan and having frequented Saginaw on numerous occassions, I have to completely agree with you. I wouldn’t LIVE in Saginaw, but, within the course of 2 months of leasing the property (possibly one?) she could make up her $850 outlay of back taxes easily!
You’re absolutely correct.
The problem is the corrupt government.
It could live off the prosperity of a healthy auto industry just fine but now the engine is worn out.
That’s what I’ve been thinking. We really don’t need this bailout. With stocks low, this is the time to buy. With foreclosures and low home prices, this is the time to buy. Ok, granted the neighborhood of the above mentioned house is a disaster but there are many areas around the country where homes in not so bad neighborhoods can be had for a song. It’s all ebb and flow. The market will turn around. It’s not all doom and gloom. Of course, it may very well be those fat cats who are to blame for this “crash” had actually planned the whole thing thinking to make a killing to further line their pockets. Remember, they’re the ones walking away with truckloads of cash.
1) Pay for property and back taxes - $850.
2) Petition the County to reassess the property for the fair market value, $2. Being sold on ebay with the auction open for a week or 2 it would be difficult for the county to debate. - No continuing taxes. HA!
3) Pull permits, $500.
4) Collapse the house. She has to do this herself because it's expensive to have demolition work done as opposed to clean-up. If she has a trailer hitch on her car, she can pull the corners out from under the house. $100.
5) Hire 3 guys with an old pickup, a trailer (and insurance) to haul away all the debris. $1600.
6) Have the city replace the sidewalk and driveway approach on the right-of-way. Municipalities do this and charge it back to the property owner. Usually it is very reasonable because the work is on city land and the cost is split or reduced. $1750
7)Plant grass and keep it mowed. $1200.
Total cost $6000. Don't know what building lots go for in Saginaw. She'll have to get 3x to make it worth her time, about $18,000.
I am wondering how Saginaw is ‘scary’?
It’s been happening here in Lansing as well.
“The Siege of Firebase Saginaw” starring Wings Hauser and R. Lee Ermey and a cast of locals.
per capita crime rates...it is a mini ghetto, crime rampant area..
Chicago was a swamp. New Orleans is part of a river delta. Most coastal cities and those near water had large areas pumped and drained centuries ago. Saginaw is no different in that sense. There is a street in Saginaw where if you drive a few blocks, you go from boarded up small houses to an subdivision of pillared McMansions near the city limit. Each house as you drive down the street gets better.
Face it, most cities would be where Saginaw is if not for a lot of money spent on PR, and municipal thugs covering up the real crime rates.
I’m not surprised Lansing is getting that way. The people of Flint were told they were uneducated union nobodies 25 years ago, as GM moved many its plants to Lansing and near Detroit. Now the same thing is happening all over. Lansing thought it was immune due to state government offices and MSU. But these are also heavily dependent on the auto industry for revenue. Someday, someone will realize that this outsourcing and globalization was a huge mistake, at least the way it was done, with only short term advantages. I hope it’s not too late.
If you are planning on living in or visiting a city you need to find out information about where things are located that might cause you some trouble. Areas where the current gang is in control and there are many break ins and people are being shot. This isn't racism. There are dangerous places in any city, and unfortunately many places in some cities. Places that decent people to not go into...white or black.
Here is a picture of the house, built in 1884.
Not that it would be PC, but that's something google map and your gps should include.
Zillow.com shows the property is worth $18,500. Probably the value of the land only.
I agree about globalization. Ross Perot was right.
That was my thought :)
It’s sad that such cities that were shining national examples in the 1950s and 1960s have deteriorated so much. But it happened in other industries and states also.
The Western side of Michigan has always had a different perception. There are forces that are creating a lot of problems now. One of these is probably illegal immigration from people who first lived around Chicago.
