Cancer Vaccine Used by 25% of Girls 13 to 17 (BARF)
New York Times ^ | 10/09/2008

ATLANTA (AP) — One in four teenage girls have received the relatively new vaccine against cervical cancer, federal health officials said Thursday.

The figures represent the government’s first substantial study of vaccination rates for the vaccine, Gardasil, which is Merck & Company’s heavily advertised three-shot series that goes after the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV. The vaccine protects against strains of the virus that cause about 70 percent of cervical cancers.

Health officials recommend that girls get the shots when they are 11 or 12, if possible, before they become sexually active. Also, 11 is the age when children are generally due for a round of vaccinations.

-SNIP-

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention based the study on household telephone surveys in late 2007. The survey results cover from when the vaccine came on the market, in mid-2006, to when the survey questions were answered.

The results are based on nearly 3,000 girls ages 13 to 17 for whom the researchers could verify vaccination information through medical records.

This vaccine is to help prevent a STD

some of the types that this virus protects against (HPV6 and HPV11) cause genital warts. some types (HPV16 and HPV18) cause long term cellular changes that end as invasive cancer.

In just little over a year, the HPV vaccine has been associated with at least five deaths

5 deaths? do you have some real statistics on this?

“As recent individuals in the news show us, we can do all we can to raise our kids to be good, responsible people, but as parents, we can’t police the entire world.”

As parents, we do the best we can. We try to teach our kids about responsibility, accountability, work ethic, Faith, etc. Eventually, it comes down to them. I learned from my parents, my husband learned, and hopefully our kids will learn.

Sarah Palin has a 17 yr old daughter who is pregnant. It’s not something we wish for our kids but if it happens we deal with it. And when we get past the shock, the embarassment (talking about family experiences, we have a few), we pull together as a family. I sure as hell don’t wish this on my kids but if it happens, after the yelling, we’d deal with it and once that baby is born, the past is forgotten.

As parents, we can barely police our own kids. There comes a time we have to let them go, make their own mistakes.

“I’ve had two doctors I trust tell me that if (or when) it is their kids, they’d recommend the vaccine.”

My kids’ doctor is the Dad of my almost 13 yr old’s best friend. Our 16 yr olds, boy and girl, friends since K. Our almost 13 yr olds are best friends (BFFs). He always does a PC even for our copay. I trust him.

I asked my Gyno what she was doing (she gave her teens the shot). She delivered my two youngest kids, they’re the same age as her two youngest. Also, while she was coming off her shift and stopped in to see me, back in 96, she asked if she could do anything for me and I said, yeah you could deliver this kid (c-section, 3rd of 4). And she did. Called the Dr. who was supposed to deliver and said she was doing it. Delivered the next one too. There are some doctors who are fantastic. My OB-GYN, our primary care physician, our kids doctor, all wonderful. I trust them all.

“We have a family friend whose granddaughter became infected with this virus from her first boyfriend at around 17. She developed cancer about two years later. Not only will she never have children (the cancer had spread), but she will never be right, physically. It’s been 6 or so years and she still isn’t out of the woods.”

I’m so sorry. Prayers for your friend’s granddaughter.

I don’t know all that much about this virus or what causes it, etc. I went with our doctor’s advice.

Thanks for your post.

But I still believe there is a direct connection to Gardasil and teen sex just as there is to condoms and teen sex.

One prevents cancer. (We hope)

The other prevents babies. (We hope)

So if there was an HIV vaccine you wouldn’t want your kid to get it? I don’t think the idea is to assume anything but to prepare for the worst because kids, no matter how will raised, do stupid things. I’m sure Palin raised her kid right and look what happened. I know kids who were raised right way back in the day before the hyper-sexualization of culture and they did stupid things.

News Flash: THE GARDASIL VACCINE IS ALL ABOUT SEX. It is designed to prevent an STD which causes cancer. And the way you get this STD is through....wait for it...sex.

It is true that it would be pretty much impossible for anyone to contract HPV if they never have any sexual intercourse during the course of their entire lives. But unless you are going to lock your daughters up in an ivory tower with a chastity belt for life, it’s pretty unrealistic to think she will never have sex.

A woman could be totally chaste and virginal until her marriage but if her husband was not so before their marriage, he could carry the virus.

Let’s say for example that a 25 year old, morally upstanding, church going woman who is still a virgin meets a really great, morally upstanding straight arrow 30 year old guy at her church; they fall in love and decide to get married. But what if this guy, when he was in his late teens, “sowed some wild oats” as it were and had pre-marital sex a couple of times with one or two girlfriends (and how many guys have?) until he saw that wasn’t the sort of lifestyle he wanted to follow. Although he is a great guy now and the type of fine upstanding young man that any mother or father would be happy to have marry their daughter, he could be carrying the HPV virus and unknowingly pass it on to his wife and put her at risk for cervical cancer.

I really don’t understand the hysteria about this vaccine. Like all vaccines, there are some risks, but nothing I’ve read about it from the CDC and the FDA documents about the “adverse reactions” are anything to be alarmed about. Polio, TB and measles vaccines have similar “adverse reactions” – soreness at the injection site, slight fever, and even fainting and lightheadedness (which is more of an emotional reaction than a physical one) but the overall benefits outweigh the risks IMHO.

News Flash: PREMARITAL SEX HAS BEEN AROUND AS LONG AS MEN AND WOMEN HAVE BEEN AROUND.

It’s a virus, not a moral judgment. Any young woman that thinks that the Gardisil vaccine will prevent all STD’s and give her card blanche to have indiscriminate sex is either stupid or had irresponsible parents who never bothered to teach her about the facts of life.

People need to get past the stupid ass thought process that a shot or not a shot is going to in some silly ass way instill morals and judgement.

It's actually quite an Islamic point of view - that it's better that the girl die of cancer than get a shot that might lead everyone to condemn her parents because they think she might become a slut some day.

“You my friend are an idiot. “

NO, you my friend are the idiot. You are the one giving your children tacit permission for unprotected sex.

For the sake of your daughter I hope she inherited most of her genes from your spouse and not you because you are a disgrace to the gene pool.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

Deaths due to HPV Vaccine

what i am really interested in, is your statement in post #30:

The death rate for the vaccine already exceeds the cancer rate for cervical papiloma by two orders of magnitude. This is first degree murder.

what is your source of information for this statement?

“A woman could be totally chaste and virginal until her marriage but if her husband was not so before their marriage, he could carry the virus”

That’s what bothers me...males can carry this virus. They aren’t being vaccinated, as far as I know.

I don’t understand the hysteria associated with this vaccine either. I was really hesitant to have my two teens (almost 18, and 16) get the vaccine. I was also hesitant to allow my two youngest to get the Chicken Pox vaccine. I waited until this year for them, almost 13 and almost 11, to get the Chicken Pox vaccine. My two older kids got chicken pox so figured the two youngest would too. They didn’t so finally caved and got them the vaccine this year.

I was hesitant about the Gardisil vaccine as I’ve been hesitant about any vaccine or medicine that hasn’t been around for decades. No hesitation with the polio, MMR, etc. vaccines. And this year, both teens got the Mennigitis (sp) vaccine (one had a reaction, passed out, which was common in the doctor’s office from what I was told). The other teen had no problem with it.

“Any young woman that thinks that the Gardisil vaccine will prevent all STD’s and give her card blanche to have indiscriminate sex is either stupid or had irresponsible parents who never bothered to teach her about the facts of life.”

Well said. Thank you for saying it.

“And now as I mock you for your total misunderstanding of the subject”

Another mocking. Great way to have a serious discussion. I don’t think I’m totally misunderstanding the subject.

“back up and apologize for mocking you earlier with my condom remarks. Yes they were “too personal”.

Thank you for that. That comment was way too personal and uncalled for, imo.

I figure we’re Conservatives here, or mostly we’re all conservatives. That means social conservatives, too. I know how I’m trying to raise my kids, just like my parents tried to raise me and my sibs.

Condoms have been around since way before I was born. Same with “the pill” or other forms of Birth Control. None had made me think pre-marital sex was ok or gave me a pass to engage in teen sex. Or pre-marital sex.

We have TV shows, movies, much popular culture that encourages premarital sex, homo sex/homo lifestyle as normal, etc. Yet, my kids still say ewwww when they see homos on TV or in movies. As for teens having sex, there’s tons of teens not having sex, too. They just don’t get the press. Back in the 80’s, every teen was having sex, often if we went by what the Media told us. Well, I wasn’t and many of my friends weren’t either. And those who were, were in serious relationships, in love, and caught up in all the excitement of that “love.”

We all try to raise our kids right. Then it’s up to them.

Mock away :)

You are the one giving your children tacit permission for unprotected sex.

I also was involved in the conception of my child, which I hope will some day result in her (and my sons) having the opportunity to realize just how wonderful having a child of their own is.

Last time I checked, that typically requires unprotected sex. Does even conceiving and raising a child, especially with my direct and intentional hope that they too will someday have the same joys as me also count as "tacit permission for unprotected sex"?

How about the flu vaccine? If I want my children to be vaccinated for the influenza, am I giving them tacit approval to get busy? Sure you could get the flu other ways, but getting busy would lead to a lot of direct contact. Am I giving "tacit permission for unprotected sex" with the flu vaccine?

How about letting my daughter walk around without a burka? Is her very existance on this earth "tacit permission for unprotected sex"?

While I am a big fan of Clarence Thomas, I'd have to say I'm not much of a fan of the lack of ability to present an intelligent comment you indicate.

For the sake of your daughter I hope she inherited most of her genes from your spouse and not you because you are a disgrace to the gene pool.

Short lesson for you, the genes of a child are the result of both mother and father. If a child got "most" of their genes from one parent, there would be problems.

Much more serious than the problems you have with lack of intelligence. But, I would suspect, given the quality and intelligence of your post, that understanding even the basics of genetics (Mom + Dad = Kid) will have you google searching for hours...

you are a disgrace to the gene pool

Your comment is noted and will be appropriately filed with other irrelevant items.

Honestly, to say that a parent who voluntarily chooses to have their child vaccinated from virus which can cause cancer is a disgrace to the gene pool is the epitome of idiocy.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

No thanks, I prefer a fine cigar. And you sir, are an extreme idiot.

Barack, Is that you?

"But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."

Not even a good attempt at avoiding the question...

I asked a simple question - if a person makes a poor choice, do they deserve to die from cancer?

Answer the question. Or are you afraid to confirm that you certainly are an extreme idiot?

This debate is not about killing unborn children, it is about a vaccine for a virus that may cause cancer.

Do you approve of stoning women who are not accompanied by a family member? Are you part of the Burkha Bunch or what?

Should men who, by definition are part of the it takes two to tango equation, deserve to die for making a poor choice.

Are you posting from Saudi Arabia?

“As a member here for more than 10 years”

“Since Apr 10, 2003”

You need to recheck your math or buy a new calendar.

Nor does your name appear on the donor list.

Your inference to some type of superior rank as a Freeper appears to be without evidence.

Report abuse if you want and if the mods think I'm out of line they will tell me so or ban me. But you might want to make sure your glass house doesn't get dinged in the process...

I still don't know why you and some of the others won't answer the simple question as to whether or not person who makes a mistake deserves to die from cancer. Nor have I seen an answer as to why other vaccines designed to prevent communicable diseases, fail to garner your angst.
