McCain considering new economic plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain is considering rolling out a new comprehensive economic package to tackle the U.S. financial crisis, one of his closest supporters said on Sunday.

"I think it goes along the lines that now is the time to lower tax rates for investors, capital gains tax, dividend tax rates, to make sure that we can get the economy jump-started," said Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

McCain, 72, was in the Washington area and off the campaign trail on Sunday, prepared for his debate on Wednesday against Democratic rival Barack Obama.

That debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, will be the last of three face-offs between the two candidates before the November 4 election and will give McCain one more chance to reverse his recent slide in the polls.

Obama, 47, opened a 6-point lead over McCain in a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Sunday. Other polls, too, show the Democratic senator from Illinois pulling away, and s some give him a lead in double digits.

Much of Obama's improvement has been credited to the public thinking he is much better at handling the economy than McCain. Obama has criticized McCain as being erratic on his economic proposals, jumping from one idea to another.

A new plan would be designed to help McCain shore up his economic credentials. Politico, the online political news report, said more than 30 ideas had been put forward but there was no final package, although whatever developed was likely to include at least temporary tax cuts for capital gains and dividends.

"It will be a very comprehensive approach to jump-start the economy, by allowing capital to be formed easier in America by lowering taxes," Graham said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

This is EXACTLY what needs to happen, there is plenty of cash just sitting on the sidelines waiting to be invested as long as the climate is right.

Do it and do it now, John McCain. Make a coherant choice - marxism or capitalism. Less taxes or more. Right now, the plan is not clear. Address healthcare and Tort reform, too.

Now is the time to sink the IRS and get the Fair Tax in place. How about that for fixing the economy.

McCain considering new economic plan

McCain needs to propose my economic plan which I've mentioned a few times during the last several weeks.

That plan, I'm pretty sure, would win seats for the republicans and would guarantee the reversal of his poll numbers, and very likely, McCain would be our next president.

I would agree, but what we need now is something that can be signed into law quickly.

Even if the President and Congress got serious about the Fair Tax, it would take a long time to go through all of the legislation and get everything in place. Plus, as a practical reality, it would have to start on the first day of a year, which means 2010 at the earliest.

- Lower capital gains tax

- Lower corporate income tax

- eliminate mark-to-market accounting

- freeze/reduce ALL federal spending (including this dopey bail-out sham)

AMAZING, this man and his band of criminals in congress were instrumental in causing this crisis and we still have voters who will vote for him because they feel he is better at handling the economy? I am at a loss for words! I am dumbfounded, I am beside myself, I AM SICK TO MY STOMACH! What is happening to my country!

Lower persoanl income tax, and scream it from the top of the hills. The first two are just going to look like more giveaways to Wall Street.

‘New’? Like free markets, no socialism, no more bailouts..etc.

Perhaps to Sen. McCain. But I don’t buy it. I see a stimulus package and more regulations to prevent Wall Street ‘greed’.

It's not only on the sidelines. Americans have trillions of dollars stashed in overseas accounts. With much better investment environment, we could bring that money back into the U.S., and our economic systems would boom out of sight.

Yes, but just speaking to that subject would pull in tons of votes. Understandably, it cant be done with the snap of the fingers, but if McCain would just speak about that, lots of people would fix their votes right now.

McCain, 72....like that has anything to do with it. And they put the part in there about Obama saying he was erratic.

I think he should allow Gov. Palin to announce it- and in prime time. They have to start taking advantage of the fact that Sarah draws the biggest audience- It will also make Sarah appear Presidential, undercutting the usual criticism.
