NEW YORK (CBS) ― Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is entering the third and final presidential debate Wednesday with a wide lead over Republican rival John McCain nationally, a new CBS News/New York Times poll shows.
The Obama-Biden ticket now leads the McCain-Palin ticket 53 percent to 39 percent among likely voters, a 14-point margin. One week ago, prior to the Town Hall debate that uncommitted voters saw as a win for Obama, that margin was just three points.
Among independents who are likely voters - a group that has swung back and forth between McCain and Obama over the course of the campaign - the Democratic ticket now leads by 18 points. McCain led among independents last week.
McCain's campaign strategy may be hurting hurt him: Twenty-one percent of voters say their opinion of the Republican has changed for the worse in the last few weeks. The top two reasons cited for the change of heart are McCain's attacks on Obama and his choice of Sarah Palin as running mate.
Obama is widely seen as running the more positive campaign: Sixty-one percent of those surveyed say McCain is spending more time attacking his opponent than explaining what he would do as president. Just 27 percent say the same of Obama.
McCain's favorable rating has fallen four points from last week, to 36 percent, and is now lower than his 41 percent unfavorable rating. Obama, by contrast, is now viewed favorably by half of registered voters and unfavorably by just 32 percent.

It’s over!! It’s over!! OMG What will we do???? What will we DO!!!! OMG!!!!!
Just practicing LOL!! Please 14 points-—get real. :)
looks like they are also trying to discourage McCain from using Ayers and Wright tomorrow night.
I believe they are taking the "Bradley Effect" voters and calling them N/A on the response sheets.
The rest of it is a simple matter of shifting Republican voters who intend to vote for Obama into the independent category. They then misrepresent the total percntage of the electorate they've identified as independents.
It's really difficult to work your way backwards through all of this. I did it for Missouri and determined that the pollsters were claiming there were MORE independents than Republicans, and MORE independents than Democrats. This amplified the 11% black vote several fold to where they were representing over 50% of the Democrat vote.
Each one of these steps is justified in someone's mind I am sure.
unweighed | weighed | ||
Registered Voters | 972 | 902 | |
Reg. Voters | Democrats | 371 | 338 |
Reg. Voters | Republicans | 295 | 263 |
Reg. Voters | Independents | 306 | 301 |
Reg. Voters | Effective Likely Voters | 699 |
The D & R weighting looks accurate.
Good one!
I think you think "you" do.
Haha! CBS-NYT... funny.
Yeah because everything that comes out of CBS and the NYSlimes is like so true. 60 minutes may even do a piece on this...
I’d think they’d worry about making their electorate (Dems) complacent with this type of hype.
If these polls are accurate, fine Obama wins, but if these polls are abberations, and he loses, they were irresponsible and will create a lot of trouble in this country in the aftermath of the election.
Heh!
Anyone have that animated picture of a pig flying by chance?
I said to ignore this poll. Obama is NOT leading by 13%. You are so dispirited it’s pathetic. Snap out of it man. Three weeks!
I'm sure you didn't mean to repeat yourself, but aren't the Dallas Cowboys O-line and the dead one in the same?
So we are to believe that in 1 WEEK his lead has gone from 3 to 14? BS BS BS C BS!! and what may we attribute this to?
next week Maobama will be up 45
That’s one ugly pattern:

Now its upto UBL.
If he endorses him and says a little prayer for brother Obama and puts out a video, as he did for Kerry, a last minute ringing endorsement, perhaps that would change things.
McCain is going to make MESS out of debate tomorrow night.
He is trying to be funny, angry, positive, negative, happy, angry, optimist, pessimist, all at the SAME time.
Pick ONE mood and stick with it.
Well rehearsed jokes are all falling flat.
At the same time count 95% of black respondents as being Dem.
It's not the discounting of the Rep vote that controls. It's the discounting of the white Dem vote AND the accentuation of the Ind vote that controls everything in these polls.
I expect all the MSM polls to show OsamaObama with a poll result of “105% of likely voters prefer The Messiah/Our Hero Obama” on election eve......
