Republican John McCain has a third and final chance to debate his way back into contention when he faces his hard-charging White House rival Barack Obama in New York later Wednesday.

...At the weekend, McCain promised to Virginia supporters he would "whip" his Democratic opponent's "you know what" during the evening debate starting at 0100 GMT at Hofstra University on Long Island.

Promises, promises...

My friends, my opponent is a fine American and a good family man, and I would be supporting him if I weren't running. But please vote for me anyway, though it's OK if you don't."

With the final debate tonight - this song has entered my mind:

Anoint my head anoint my feet
Send your angels raining down
Here on the battle ground
For your glory
We’re taking territory
Fighting unseen enemies
Like never before
We’re Waging War

[Bridge:]
I’m tired of principalities
Messing with me
(Waging war)
I’m tired of the devil
Stealing from me
(Waging war)
I promise he won’t get
One more thing
(Waging war)
I’m taking it back
Taking territory
(Waging war)
I’m ready for the battle
I’m ready to win
(Waging war)
My weapon of power
He lives within
(Waging war)
I can’t be defeated
The enemy gotta flee
(waging war)
I’m taking it back
Taking territory

Going into battle
Going into battle

Be my sword
Be my shield
As we claim the victory
Over the enemy
In your name
You rule and rain
Never being defeat
Anymore
We’re waging war

[Bridge]

Send your fire
Send your fire

[Bridge 2:]
Fire by night
Cloud by day
A strong tower
Send the latter rain
Lion of Judah
Lord, God,
Mighty In battle
Since you did
It back then
We know you’ll do
It again

We’re going into battle
We’re going into battle

[Bridge 2]

Waging war

(CeCe Winans)

"Whip" his "you know what"

Why is that in parenthesis? is AFP suggesting something? Why not just print what McCain said? He didn't say "You know what" He said, He'll whip his "commie" butt. Except I added the "commie" part. AFP would like to add different word I'm sure.

Is this akin to telegraphing your punches or is it more like the kid talking about going to see the elephant?

This is good, except he promised the same thing last week but didn’t really deliver. To be fair, last week’s format may have prevented him to do so.

I agree. He said the gloves would come off LAST week.

I didn’t see it. All I’ve seen since is a combination of “be nice” and body language that says “I’m beat already”

Like many who know nothing about winning elections you want John McCain to be an attack dog.

That would please about 20 percent of the voters who are right wingers and who want to trash Obama.

But the real problem is to gain and maintain a lead among independent swing votes. Since neither Republicans or Democrats win all the time some voters have to change sides from time to time. They are the people who decide elections.

They are called swing voters or independent voters. They make their decision to vote for a candidate based on two factors. The first is they vote for nice guys they can trust and like. They will not vote for an attack dog candidate becuase they fear it is only a matter or time before he attacks them.

They also vote for the candidate that they think will do the most for them.

Day in and day out the MSM tries to get ignorant conservatives to demand that McCain reduce his support to under 35 percent by turning the swing voters off. They don’t say it but their intention is to get McCain to turn independents off by becoming an attack dog.

People like you make sure that independent voters will never vote for a Republican... because Republicans are all attack dogs that can’t be trusted with power.

Back in 1980 the right wing nuts were all over Reagan becuase he refused to say a single word critical of President Carter. When asked to trash Carter over his screwed up handling of the Iran hostage issue, Reagan offered his support to Carter. When asked to trash Carter for the screwed up economy Reagan refused and said Carter was a good and honest man. McCain is running a Reagan like campaign and once again the right wing is out there trashing a winning strategy.

People like you were angry and mad that Reagan who was some 15 points behind in the polls with 3 weeks to go was going down to massive defeat at the hands of Jimmy Carter because Reagan would not fight. In fact the nastiest thing Reagan said about Carter was “There you go again!”

If you look at the returns Reagan defeated Carter by 9 points. Reagan was no dummy. He knew that only 35 percent of voters were Republicans and it takes 50 percent to win. He knew how to get swing voter support and he knew he could not get it by trashing Carter.

If you did not exixt... Obama would have to invent you. If you want to know who is going to put Obama in the white house .. try looking in the mirror.

Like many who post here just to see their own words in print, you don't know what you're talking about.

If you had the brains to actually ASK what I wanted him to do, you'd know you're as ignorant as you accuse others of being.

He went into territory that he just didn’t have to venture in with that recent comment. I so hope he isn’t just talking this time. Unfortunately now that he has called Obama a decent man and nothing to be afraid of, a sudden nuclear attack may look kind of weird.

Reagan didn't have to attack Carter. He was a known quantity. He had been president for 4 years. The American people had had enough of Carter's go at it. They were already fed up. Obama is still an unknown quantity to the people that don't follow politics like we all do. They think he's a nice guy. McCain doesn't have to be foaming at the mouth, but he needs to let the American people know about how radical his ideas are and what the affect his ideas will have.

I predict another boring debate with John McCain still being his same, wussy “always be nice to Barack Obama” self. Sigh. And the entire U.S. is supposed to also be forced into third world socialism forever, partly because John McCain and most of his campaign blew it “big time” in ‘08?

I'm not looking for a nuclear attack, but a clear definition of what he wants to do. He has to give Americans something to vote FOR even as he carefully explains what's wrong with Obama's plans and his cohorts. I know that's too "tough" for some of the milquetoasts who want him to just be a happy warrior ala Reagan, but times have changed, and Reagan never had to deal with a media landscape like this. McCain has to look in that camera and be direct and PRECISE and strong and give us something to support, not just more mush. He comes off very poorly when he points fingers and says things like "That one" (I actually cringed when he said that); he can't just be the grizzly old dude telling you to knock off the nonsense and vote for a real man, he has to point out why going Obama's way is pointless and then offer something positive.

I really doubt he can do that. The last two debates, he's gotten up there and he hasn't attacked, but he hasn't done anything else, either. He has to show strength and direction in a way that makes one look at Obama and see all he's got is sunny nothingness to offer.

Good to see your reasonable post here amongst all of the gloom-and-doom.

There are some who have given up, but I think most of us haven't.

We all realize that Election Day is November 4. Those who have already declared Obama the winner are people I would not want on any team I was leading.

If there is an occasion to do the "woe is me" drama-queen dance, that would be November 5 and only if the unthinkable happens. I guess some people love to wallow in misery so much they have to start early...in case things don't come out their way. ;-)

"I'm a realist," they say, puffing up with moral superiority.

"You're a quitter," I respond.
