Gingrich Impressed With Powell Nod - 'Eliminated Experience Argument'
ABC ^ | 10/19/08 | Mary Bruce

Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich reacted this morning to Colin Powell's endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., arguing, "What that just did in one sound bite... is it eliminated the experience argument."

Powell, the former secretary of state, announced his long-awaited endorsement Sunday morning, explaining that he is backing Obama "because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of this campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities – we have to take that into account – as well as his substance – he has both style and substance – he has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president."

In all-star roundtable edition of "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," former presidential adviser David Gergen categorized Powell's announcement as "the most important endorsement of the campaign so far."

McCain already eliminated the experience argument when he chose Palin. It may win him the election, but Palin is no more ready to be president than Obama.

Coming from ABC I would surmise that he was taken out of context

The rhetoric coming from these so-called ‘republican/neo-con” elites lays bare the contempt they hold for the intellect of the average American citizen.

They actually believe they can’t be seen and understood.

You could argue Kissinger was asuccess as Sec of State, and Powell was atotal flop ... From lying about the Iraq WMDs to not speaking up when he knew the truth abot Armitage with the plame affair.

And now he knifes the troops in the back, that he sent to battle, bu endorsing cut and run himself.

One thing it does do, it helps McCain because now he can focus on winning and not pointless endorsements.

BTW, the anti-war Democrats hate Powell for what he did at the UN.

I’d say Joe the plumber means more than a washed up old bad secretary of state.

how someone so smart could do, and say, such foolish things

Perhaps because he's not that smart?

No, Newt.

The experience question is still there. Powell didn’t give Obama experience by endorsing him. He simply showed he’s not honest.

It doesn't. Barry remains inexperienced and unqualified to be POTUS. Spreading the wealth, income redistribution and promoting a feel good foreign policy adds up to one rotten agenda for America.

"What that just did in one sound bite... is it eliminated the experience argument."

Geeze hearing what Newt says has become equally as painful as listening to McCain. Never have I wanted to break my t.v. so much as watching Chris Wallace interview McCain today. Wallace gave McCain every opportunity to lay it all out, but McCain kept wiffing'

Seriously, McCain should write a book on how to obfuscate legitimate questions while running for President. I honestly believe he would outdo Obama.

I'll be voting early, but McCain's pitifully flat campaign has ALLOWED THE BIASED MEDIA TO RUN ROUGHSHOD OVER HIM. If he would have gone on OFFENSE weeks ago and pounded home the media bias, they would have had to recoil. At the very least, he would have brought the subject to the forefront.

I'm left just saying prayers for our country because this man is so damned ineffective and now Newt is going south on us too.

Somebody wake me up. This must all be a bad dream. It’s like every time we turn around another bizzare thing is happening from one of our own. Peggy Noonan, Buckley, Powell, Gingrich....What the?

Let's just say it: nobody wants to criticize Colin Powell for the same reason many don't want to criticize Obama: because they're black. I believe the real reason many white people who are supporting Obama are doing so is because they are sick of not being able to criticize anyone who's black. They figure, “If we elect a black President, Oprah et al will be satisfied and stop yelling, ‘Racism’”. These people are naive. Decades pass and USA is still afraid of black anger. There is nothing anyone can do to assuage it, but people think electing Obama will be throwing them a bone.

I don’t think Newt was impressed - I do think Newt is being honest. Think about it - Newt’s only dog in this fight is Palin. If the goal is to usher in the new faces of the GOP, whether they win or not, the new faces (Palin, Jindal) are launched.
It’s still important that McCain win against BHO, but he was never going to do that with the help of Newt. The division in our party is palpable.

Palin is no more ready to be president than Obama . . .

Disagree. Palin is far more qualified than Obama and would move the country in the right direction.

You’re right. And an endorsement two weeks from election day is hardly a ringing sign of support. Sounds like Powell is hedging his bets, probably looking for an ambassadorship in a nice cushy spot like London or Canberra.

and yet....

not ONE WORD from powell about obama that he’s EXPERIENCED in his reasoning to endorse him!!

“because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of this campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities – we have to take that into account – as well as his substance – he has both style and substance – he has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president.”

Eh. The experience argument is old news. We’re onto the Marxist argument.
