Voters' Voices: Gun control or out of control?

Douglas Caroselli says we should have the right to bear arms.
The debate surrounding the Second Amendment is making a comeback as Election Day nears and voters at McBride's Guns in Austin were passionate about their guns.

Store managers say sales at McBride's Guns have shot up over the last six months thanks to the person who would have least wished it to happen.

Voter Roger Mendelson said the increased gun sales recently has more to do with who is likely to take charge of the White House and gun owners are planning ahead.

"Mr. Obama voted for a severe handgun regulation in the state of Illinois," Mendelson said.

Gun enthusiasts say they're afraid that's an indication what's to come in an Obama presidency. So they're stocking up before Election Day.

Douglas Caroselli said he's simply more confident with McCain in office when it comes to gun ownership.

"Mr. McCain has been out there and seen the world and knows why we have the 2nd amendment. I don't have that confidence whatsoever with Obama," he said.

Caroselli said everyone has a right to protect themselves and others. A few years ago he had an eye-opening experience.

"I pulled up to a gas station one day and there were two men beating another with clubs," he said.

Roger Mendelson says he won't support a president who compromises the Constitution.

He then approached the men in his car and honked his horn. Caroselli chased away the men without ever having to pull out his gun. But he says knowing he had a gun was what mattered.

"Our law enforcement is there to serve. But normally they're there at the crime scene after it's occurred, not while it's occurring," Caroselli said.

For Mendelson, owning a gun is not so much about protection but for sport.

"I'm a sportsman. I enjoy being outside with my dog and my son, and we hunt, and we fish, and we hike, and we have a good time outside," Mendelson said. "Handguns and shotguns and rifles are part of our fun."

Mendelson said gun control may not be as big an issue as the economy but he still wouldn't support a President who compromises the constitution.

"I think people ought to have the right to bear arms," he said.

It's a controversy coming into greater focus as the candidates aim for the White House.

Obama said he believes in the constitutional right to bear arms but he endorsed a handgun ban in Illinois, later saying he supported it because it would take illegal guns off the streets.

While McCain has said in the past he does not own a gun, he has voted against various gun bans including opposition to restrictions on assault rifles and on ammunition.

Tell Doug that the Supreme Court has decided on this one, and the good news is that he already has it. (Interesting spin the author puts on it though, isn't it? She makes it sound like we don't.)

I bought myself an Armalite rifle this week, and in the process I've visited a number of gun stores and sporting goods stores. More than once, I've heard one of the sales people in the stores say “we can't keep these things in stock.” At a couple of stores, there were people buying quite a bit of ammunition. One guy said “you never know what might happen the way this election is going.” If the weather is nice tomorrow, I'm headed for the range to zero and ‘break in’ my new rifle.

Stopped in at one of the local gun shops here in the Northeast for a browse and a chin wag; gun sales are waaaaay up. They can’t keep them stocked, they’re moving so fast. “Get ‘em while you still can” seems to be a widespread feeling, despite the recent SCOTUS decision.

Moynihan Asks Big Tax Increase On Ammunition

By ADAM CLYMER
Published: November 4, 1993
Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan said today that he would insist that President Clinton’s health-care plan include a huge increase in Federal taxes on handgun ammunition that would make some especially destructive bullets unaffordable.
The New York Democrat has often contended that the best way to attack gun violence would be to restrict the sale of ammunition, not guns. Today, for instance, he noted that the nation has a 200-year supply of guns but only a 4-year supply of ammunition.
“Guns don’t kill people; bullets do,” he told the Senate as he introduced his legislation today. “It is time the Federal Government began taxing handgun ammunition used in crime out of existence.”

Obama said he believes in the constitutional right to bear arms but he endorsed a handgun ban in Illinois, later saying he supported it because it would take illegal guns off the streets.

Obama said he believes in the constitutional right to free speech, but in Missouri he's set police and prosecutors threatening criminal charges against people who as much as criticise him. In Ohio, his acolytes in government positions have criminally misused government resources to try to find derogatory information on Joe (the Plumber) Wurzelbacher. (They were unsuccessful. One is charged. Ringleader Helen Jones-Kelley, a max Obama donor, remains at large).

In two past elections, a primary and a general, Obama won essentially unopposed -- after a mystery Obama supporter in a records office leaked sealed family-court records to the Obama-supporting press.

(I'm not suggesting that Jack Ryan wasn't a dirtbag. But Obama is a dirtbag himself to have had his flunkies break the law to slime Hull, his primary opponent, and then Ryan).

Bottom line: in Obama's narcissistic world, rules are for the little people. The end justifies the means, and the end is exaltation of The One. Welcome to serfdom... please bow down before the golden idol.

Just preternaturally busy. Hey, that may change, with Barack and Barney wanting to cut DOD by 1/4 and outsource defense to Hamas. I could have oodles of time for FReeping, so it’s an ill wind that blows no good.

But I’m OK, still have all my toes and fingers, and have stayed off the VA’s “TBI aka gun ban list”.
