Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey could be appointed as U.S. ambassador to Britain, according to rumours stoked by a former senior British diplomat.
Journalist Peter Jay said today she would be a 'sensible choice' for the role under an Obama administration.
Mr Jay, who was British ambassador to the U.S. during Jimmy Carter's presidency, spoke as polls suggest Barack Obama is extending his lead in the race for the White House.

I voted for Bill Clinton in 1992 (young and stupid, please forgive me). One of the first things he did to turn me off was to appoint based on sex and race quotas a “Cabinet that looks like America”, which someone described as “black lawyers, Hispanic lawyers, and female lawyers”. By the 1994 mid-term elections, I returned to the Republican party. If Obama is elected, I hope enough Americans have a similar awakening.
This will keep the old chaps from always having a stiff upper lip.
