CNN) -- With 10 days until Election Day, long-brewing tensions between GOP vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin and key aides to Sen. John McCain have become so intense, they are spilling out in public, sources say. Several McCain advisers have suggested to CNN that they have become increasingly frustrated with what one aide described as Palin "going rogue."
A Palin associate, however, said the candidate is simply trying to "bust free" of what she believes was a damaging and mismanaged roll-out.
McCain sources say Palin has gone off-message several times, and they privately wonder whether the incidents were deliberate. They cited an instance in which she labeled robocalls -- recorded messages often used to attack a candidate's opponent -- "irritating" even as the campaign defended their use. Also, they pointed to her telling reporters she disagreed with the campaign's decision to pull out of Michigan.
A second McCain source says she appears to be looking out for herself more than the McCain campaign.

Did anyone see Palin’s speech in Iowa this afternoon. What amazing is that Fox News started showing but it cut away fairly early in the speech while CNN actually showed the whole speech. What’s the world coming to. LOL! I don’t know how this will end up but win or lose Sarah can hold her head proud. Plus I just found out that my sister who voted for Hillary Clinton in the primary is voting for McCain. So how about that.

1) she is positioning herself for any future national political role
2) she believes mccain’s style will not reverse the current apparently deficit in polls. personally, I agree.
3) she realizes that the public agrees with her far more than the career washington politician mccain when she just speaks common sense, such as on robocallers
4) anyone who saw her at the national convention should have realized that no one was going to tell this lady what to do, beyond what she herself would view in her interests.

It’s a smear. They cite unknown sources and just use at a vehicle to smear. Yahoo and CNN do this daily. Yesterday it was “Republican” Alan Greenspan yada yada yada. He was a Fed member. You don’t tag feb members with party affiliation or if you do you better say “Democrat” Reporter Andrea Mitchell. I mean come on. We are going to end up breaking some eggs before this political cycle runs it’s course.

All depends on what you mean by "legitimate." Any number of opportunists worm their way into campaigns and may do their jobs well enough but given the chance be happy to curry favor with some media insider. Never know when a media contact might come in handy later on, especially if you're ambitious and don't much care what it takes.
