Omaha Councilman Pitches Gun Crackdown - Plan Comes In Response To Increased Gun Violence

OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha's City Council president plans to respond to the city's gun violence problem with a program of increased penalties, closer surveillance and higher awareness.

Dan Welch said he plans to put his anti-violence proposal onto next week's council agenda after working on it for months. He said it's already received endorsements of key city officials.

"We've got too much gun violence in the city of Omaha," he said. "We've got too many people creating trouble at all hours of the night."

His plan comprises six amendments to current city ordinances. Three are aimed at controlling disruptive crowds of people, and the others are designed to crack down on illegal guns.

"What we would like to do is get as many illegal guns off the street as possible," Welch said.

The gun-related amendments would require that no pawned firearm be returned to a person until it's registered, make the discharge of a firearm on public property punishable by a minimum of 30 days in jail and make carrying an illegal gun punishable by a minimum of 30 days in jail.

He said scenes of violence involving large crowds earlier this year were among the things that prompted him to act.

"I hope that people start to get the message," he said.

His plan already has the support of the Omaha Police Department and Mayor Mike Fahey.

"Tougher sentences, I think that's a great idea," Fahey said.

As the plan moves ahead, it does so with a wait-and-see attitude from community activists like Preston Love Jr.

"I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt," Love said.

He suggested that Welch seek input from people in the area most affected by violence before going forward. He also said the proposed amendments would not address the heart of the issue.

"Yes, we want to get guns off the streets, but it's important to observe that the guns are only part of the problem," he said.

Gun grabbers seem rather energized. That has been a good omen in the past, but not for them.

What is “gun violence”?

Is that like when SUVs suddenly drive into people?

Looks like the good citizens of Omaha don't care much for Mayor Mike Fahey:

Omaha Mayor Fahey Recall Petition Drive Starts Today

Send me back to Kansas City

The petitions start circulating today. If you are fed up with Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey, whether it be for his ill-advised, forcible and undemocratic annexations, his costly plans for a needless new ball park, or his overreaching desire to expand the grasp of city government, get out and sign a petition. Don't wait: 21,734 valid signatures are needed by April 22 to get the issue brought to a general vote.

The Black communities of Chicago, D.C., NYC, Detroit should be screaming this at their Reps. Gun control is aimed at the Black community. But, it's now expanding.

“Gun control is aimed at the Black community.”

I disagree.

Gun violence in black neighborhoods is always used by politicians as an excuse to impose gun control. But they never confiscate the guns in the black neighborhoods.

Its basically a “bait and switch” scam to disarm everyone else.

All persons are by nature free and independent, and have certain inherent and inalienable rights; among these are life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and the right to keep and bear arms for security or defense of self, family, home, and others, and for lawful common defense, hunting, recreational use, and all other lawful purposes, and such rights shall not be denied or infringed by the state or any subdivision thereof.
Nebraska Constitution. art. I, sec. 1

All the RKBA language was added by an initiative of the People in 1988. So far the Courts seem reluctant to enforce it, having ruled that it doesn't invalidate the very sorts laws it was intended to invalidate. (1989 and 1990). Imagine that.

It’s Kennesaw, Georgia. And by law, every homeowner in Kennesaw must own a firearm. The crime rate there is very low, for obvious reasons.

Omaha.. Not as nutty as Chicago but still trying.

I grew up in Nebraska, and a lot of people I know joke that Omaha is NOT Nebraska. Not sure who would claim them.
