From NBC's Domenico Montanaro and Mark Murray Despite public polling to the contrary, the McCain campaign claims to be "dead even" in Iowa.
"He has similar polling," Campaign Manager Rick Davis said of Obama during a conference call with reporters. "He's headed back there."
Obama held an event today in Des Moines and will take his daughters trick-or-treating in the Hawkeye State tonight. Iowa borders Obama's home state of Illinois, and Obama skipped an event in the state when he left the trail to visit his ailing grandmother in Hawaii.
A Mason-Dixon poll, conducted Oct. 22-23, showed Obama up 51%-40% in Iowa. A Marist College poll, conducted in the same period, showed Obama up 52%-42%. Research 2000, conducted Oct. 19-22, showed Obama up 54%-39%. There have been no reliable polls in the past week.
Davis and political director Mike Duhaime (formerly Giuliani's campaign manager) urged reporters to not underestimate their ground game. They cited the millions of dollars the Republican National Committee has poured in. Davis called it "historic" and said it has "exceeded any campaign ever." Davis said the RNC-McCain campaign have spent about $325 million. Duhaime said the RNC has 1.1 million volunteers.

I’m in Iowa City and don’t have much of a sense of what’s going on due to being surrounded by libs. That said, I see about as many McCain signs as I do Obama signs. Since I think conservatives tend not to have signs due to possible vandalism, I don’t know how much weight you can give to their presence or absence.
What am I finding is that people think the race will be tight, which is surprising, considering all the hoopla surrounding the Messiah here in Iowa.
And Obama is taking his kids "Trick or treating" in Iowa tonight. Something does not add up.

There are some very dedicated folks there who will get out the message!!!
They put a valiant fight in 2004 (though Iowa went blue, it was close -- real close)...

It involved a computerized database that over the years grew into the most effective and useful database about voters on the face of this earth. It involved thousands and tousands of trained volunteers who spent the summer and fall leaning and working on getting out the vote on election day.
This was a big factor in 2004. And it will be a huge factor in 2008.
Republican's canvassers don't call on Democrats. They call only on those who will vote for Republican candidate. And the database tells them who those voter are.They know how to motivate that republican vote.
Democrats said after 2004 that they would do an even better database. But the result is ACORN.
The final 72 hour Republican push changes things in a way democrats can only dream about.
Karl Rove knows it. It is not the TV spots that win elections. It is the people on the ground getting out the votes that produce victories.
Republicans work with volunteers. Democrata have to hire people. In 2004 we had 80,000 Bush volunteers working to get out the vote in Ohio. KErry had paid workers mostly goofing off. The Repubican ground game was a huge success. Kerry could not believe that he lost Ohio. His own polls showed him wining Ohio. But the Rove database and 80,000 volunteers got out enough votes to win ohio and the presidency for Bush.
This year there is a new improved version of the 2004 ground game.
It was all doom and gloom on Fox tonight. I told hubby just turn it off. We will vote on Tuesday and live with whoever wins.
Des Moines/Polk County is heavy Dem.
Rural areas more Repub.
Where I work, Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation, almost EVERYONE is on koolaid. I mean, they believe McCain is exactly like Bush, will continue all Bush did and Obama will bring “change”. They also depend heavily on funding, though, and Dems tend to be more generous with cash to keep us going.
OTOH, yard signs on the way home, most signs are McCain, 2 of 5 are O. In town, different, switched. But if you went only by the rural areas, McCain COULD possibly be in the running, if not take Iowa. But the cities typically go Dem.
Charles Grassly really came out and slammed Obama for something he must have said about how the farmers are making people fat, polluting the world and causing global warming, etc. Obama said he was just paraphrasing a magazine article, Grassly countered “that’s typical Obama, speaking how he REALLY feels then the next day, taking it back. This was all on WHO radio, typically listened to by the farmers of Iowa.........esp the noon market and farm reports.
Summary - I think Iowa is in play, but it’s going to be close. Obama doesn’t have more than say 4 points here over McCain.
Des Moines is liberal.
