Exit Poll Media Shocker: Conservatives Still Outnumber Liberals
NewsBusters ^ | November 5, 2008 | Noel Sheppard

As the election postmortems continue, it seems a metaphysical certitude media representatives will cast Tuesday's results as indicative of a continued national shift to the left they believe began when the Democrats took over Congress in 2006.

However, the exit polls don't reflect such a shift at all.

In fact, there has been virtually no change to the percentage of folks claiming to be liberal or conservative in their political ideology since 2004.

Here are the relevant numbers (2004 here and 2008 here):

Interesting, wouldn't you agree? If the past two elections were indeed a reflection of a huge leftward shift in the national ethos, shouldn't there be a serious increase in the number of folks that view themselves as liberal, and a decrease in conservatives?

Note to “conservatives”. If you voted for Obama. You are not.

Rush frequently cites a very large scale, well-designed study in which upwards of 70% of people describe themselves as conservative.

Yet, you will read even here on FR that conservatives need to “move toward the middle” and worship the almighty independents and moderates.

“Note to “conservatives”. If you voted for Obama. You are not.”

Absolutely correct. And it’s perception. There are libs in places like CA and MA that think they are conservative because their friends are raving lefties.

“Note to “conservatives”. If you voted for Obama. You are not.”

Some like to fancy themselves as “true conservatives,” which means: “I don’t like all this federal spending going on, but I’m all for surrendering overseas, opening our borders and killing babies.”

What does “conservative” mean to these people? I’d be interested in what that definition is.

If you think about it in the context of the election results, this makes sense. BHO had to run as a tax cutting, gun loving, power to the people centrist to get elected. In other words, he ran as a "compassionate conservative". If he had run as the socialist he really is, he would have been routed.

To win this election, the GOP needed to cut through BHO's lies to expose who he really is. They started to do this toward the end of the election, but it was too late. Most Americans are not inquisitive enough to find the truth themselves, so they rely on the campaigns and the Pravda media get information about the candidates. When a Dem socialist tries to portray himself as a tax cutting moderate, the GOP candidate has to attack this from day one.

It also didn't help that, at least on economic issues, there wasn't much distinction between McCain and Obama during the bailout. I'm convinced that McCain would have won if he had come out against the bailout.

And if you voted for Bush? Or Nixon?

Tell me — who are the two presidents since LBJ who have most radically expanded government?

Hint: It wasn’t Carter. Or Clinton.

“Note to “conservatives”. If you voted for Obama. You are not.”

Addendum to note to “conservatives”, if you stayed home on election day or omitted your vote for President, you are responsible for the death of America as we knew it.

Some homosexual at work was claiming he was "conservative". Many CINOs claim that they are "Catholic".

So I would take this data with a grain of salt.

I agree. He could have hammered "Obama voted for the bailout. I voted against handouts to Wall Street and Greedy Banks! Check the market, it sure worked didn't it?!?"

I’m not sure that we should rely on polls of how voters describe their own politics. In my experience there aren’t a whole lot of people who have a consistent, well-thoughtout viewpoint. It all kinda smacks of rating our kids “self-esteem” in school. That & a buck will get you a cup of coffee at WaWa.

We need a conservative candidate who can effectively articulate conservatism. We haven’t really had that since Reagan. Every other Republican claiming to be a conservative has been intimidated by the Media into some sort of compromised/confused message.
