Where Tuesday's Tide Was All Republican (Oklahoma Turns Redder Alert)
New York Times ^ | 11/7/2008 | James McKinley, Jr

Among Oklahomans, Mr. Cook and Mr. White are hardly alone. Though the state’s Democrats still outnumber its Republicans, you would never know it by looking at the election results. Oklahoma voters went for Senator John McCain by almost two to one, bucking the tide that swept Mr. Obama to the presidency. Not a single one of the state’s 77 counties backed Mr. Obama, despite his endorsement by the popular Democratic governor, Brad Henry. ...

Indeed, the state has a political landscape closely resembling that of the old solidly Democratic South, especially in its southeastern corner, known as Little Dixie, where many Southerners settled after the Civil War. When conservatives of the Old South began abandoning the party decades ago, Oklahoma’s Democrats lagged behind the historical trend. Further, the state has relatively small black and Hispanic populations, and so the Democrats did not absorb as many new voters from those groups as in the states of the old Confederacy.

These days Oklahoma Democrats dread running for local office in presidential election years, for fear of being associated with liberal nominees at the top of the ticket.

“Being liberal in Oklahoma, with the exception of a few legislative districts, will not get you elected,” said State Representative Joe Dorman, a conservative Democrat.

The only thing that got me through Tuesday night and beyond was thinking about a pendulum.

That’s the problem with the notion that some have of running sports figures for Congress... what if they turn out to be complete idiots ? Well, for the rodents, it’s par for the course, but for the GOP, it can be embarrassing. I always wondered if Jack Kemp played football without his helmet one too many times (especially his sincerity about our party making common cause with the ultraracist/ultra-anti-Semitic Black Mohammadans/Calypso Louie Farrakhan).

You are kidding. Really? I knew she was from Appleton, as was McCarthy.

Quite serious. She wouldn’t have remembered him too well as he died when she was 3. Her father and McCarthy were very close (the father was a GOP campaign strategist, helped knock out the incumbent “Young Bob” La Follette, Jr. in the ‘46 GOP Senate primary) and JM lived with the Van Susterens in Appleton when the Senate was in adjournment. It wasn’t something she went around broadcasting, and like so many children of respectable Republican households of the time, went moonbat (probably through college indoctrination) in the ‘60s and ‘70s in rebelling against them. The sister tried to run for the Senate in Maryland (another lib Dem).

Largent’s a conservative(makes me look almost liberal by comparison) and a good guy, it’s just that politics aren’t his bag. That, or he was just sick of dealing with ‘rat craziness all the time.

Ooh, that is interesting. Well, of course she wouldn’t broadcast it, eh, as vilified as he has been. Many interesting people from the Fox Valley. Paul Gigot is from Green Bay, I’m sure you know. I haven’t heard much from him lately, but I don’t watch TV.

David Boren represents it. McCain won it.

Keep your eye on Oklahoma. Republicans are now in control of the legislature and will be working hard to make the business climate more attractive, another reason to come on down.

I know. I live in the 2nd District.

I was correcting the poster. They said “Muskokee” instead of Muskogee.

"Oklahoma is a pretty bad state to live in, politics aside."

In what respect?

Its a great place to retire.
Cheap homes
Cheap gas
Great friends
You get summer, a little bit of snow, rain, and an occasional tornado, but all around great people.

The underlying bedrock culture of Oklahoma is Southern because it’s settlers were predominantly Southerners.

Congratulations to Oklahomans for not having traitors in your state that sat home! It’s a shame that the other red states didn’t vote as you guys did. Thank you!

I think he got it from his mentor, Jude Wanniski. As Laura Ingraham might say: “shut and and do economics!”
