Steele Likely to Seek RNC Leadership Post
Fox News ^ | November 11, 2008 | Bill Sammon

Posted on 11/11/2008 2:05:16 PM PST by St. Louis Conservative

Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Maryland, has decided to run for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee and is in talks with Newt Gingrich to win the former House speaker's endorsement, FOX News learned Tuesday.

Steele declined to comment, but a source close to the situation said Steele would announce his candidacy as early as Thursday.

The source also contradicted a report in Tuesday's Washington Times that Steele and Gingrich were competing for the RNC post.

"There is no fight," the source said. "This tension between Michael Steele and Newt Gingrich is totally fabricated and, in fact, Gingrich and Steele are working together to create a new strategy for the direction of the GOP."

I hope this works out. The one thing about Newt is he knows how to win. I don’t know if Michael Steele does.

Steele is an excellent choice.

Gingrich and Fred Thompson should do what they do best ... take to TV and radio and shout about conservatism for the next two years as often as they can.

It would be good (if it could get on TV) for one or both of them to do a series like Fred Friendly did years ago on the issues, something like Ethics in America.

Steele is part of the future of the party. Gingrich has his place in history, but we don’t need him to go forward.
Steele will be a big step in the right direction, pun intended.

Gingrich and Steele are working together to create a new strategy for the direction of the GOP.

Definition of the GOP: A runaway train with only left turns ahead.

I agree. We need Steele, good solid conservative. Gingrich has too much baggage and talks a good game, but then tries to play up to Democrats. We don’t need him.

Is Steele an unflinching conservative?

Does Steele know how to win?

Does Steele know how to energize the grassroots?

Does Steele know how to build party infrastructure?

Does Steele know how to fundraise as good or better than the DNC?

Perhaps. But I believe a stronger message would be sent should Michael Steele be the face of Republican dissent in America. Gingrich and Thompson can assist, but Steele should be the spearhead.

Go right, Mr. Steele. Go right!
