U.S. Teens Brimming With Self-Esteem
HealthDay News ^ | Wed Nov 12, 5:02 pm ET | E.J. Mundell

Today's American high school students are far likelier than those in the 1970s to believe they'll make outstanding spouses, parents and workers, new research shows.

They're also much more likely to claim they are "A" students with high IQs -- even though other research shows that today's students do less homework than their counterparts did in the 1970s.

The findings, published in the November issue of Psychological Science, support the idea that the "self-esteem" movement popular among today's parents and teachers may have gone too far, the study's co-author said.

"What this shows is that confidence has crossed over into overconfidence," said Jean Twenge, an associate professor of psychology at San Diego State University.

She believes that decades of relentless, uncritical boosterism by parents and school systems may be producing a generation of kids with expectations that are out of sync with the challenges of the real world.

It’s all about appearances. And now we have the master of empty suits about to reside in the White House.

And we wonder why Social Services is such judgemental asses over the parenting of our children.

And why these ninnies want to come into the workforce making $50k to $75k a year.

And why they go on stupid “Rate me” sites to garner self esteem.

And so on and so on...

I think that this Christmas is going to teach some kids that they do not always get what they want. Parents are going to be forced to manage expectations of their kids.

Hence the increase in the number of antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs being proscribed after they get a taste of the real world.

“In the history of mandkind, never have so many been so proud of doing so little.”

No wonder they love Obama. Obama’s done virtually nothing, and promises he’ll fix everything. Obama carries himself as if he were the most successful 2 term president in the history of mankind.

We are so screwed.

I constantly remind my children just how over confident kids are these days. I reinforce the message that hard work begets success, although not immediately and not without failures.

Good judgement comes from experience.

Experience comes from bad judgement.

Self esteem, as a false self confidence, a belief that everything will go right, can be devastating. True self esteem is the ability to face failure and adversity, without being morally crushed. True self esteem enables one to learn from failures and use that knowledge as a basis for success.

Which self esteem is it that the new generation is brimming with?
