Drill, Dems, Drill

Energy: That an Alaskan senator-elect wants to drill in ANWR is not a surprise. That he's a Democrat is. Were high oil prices what helped push Detroit over the edge?

There were many reasons for the collapse of the domestic auto industry. We have mentioned the high labor costs and bloated union contracts. Others have blamed the manufacture of cars and SUVs no one wanted to buy. We'd also point out that, thanks to OPEC and Congress, fewer people could afford to buy them even if they wanted to. Detroit didn't die just because corporate CEOs had a penchant for private jets.

As long as gasoline was relatively inexpensive, SUVs were all the rage. They afforded us the comfort and safety we sought, particularly after corporate fuel economy standards were forcing Detroit to make smaller and less-safe vehicles. Fuel economy standards did little to reduce our dependence on foreign oil but did raise significantly the cost of operating such vehicles. So did high gas taxes.

As Steve Milloy of junkscience.com points out, SUV popularity made a company such as Ford highly profitable and accounted for a 57-fold move in its stock price from 1982 to 1999. It was SUVs that helped the auto industry meet the United Auto Workers' demands for ever higher wages and benefits.

Yet the industry failed to recognize the connection between cheap gas and auto sales. Automakers pushed, not for more domestic drilling, but for more environmental regulation and conservation. At the 2004 New York auto show, for example, Ford CEO Bill Ford urged higher gas taxes to reduce fuel consumption. Huh? Doesn't that also increase the cost of driving?

We will not vastly expand domestic drilling if oil remains at $50.00.

If oil were stable at $90.00 we would drill but not at the current price.

Fat chance. They are going to do more to cut off drilling and exploration than anyone ever has before. We will be lucky to have enough fuel to warm us as the new ice age begins. Suppose to be 19 degrees here in our part of Alabama tonight. Been between 22-28 for the past several nights. Normal night time LOWS this time of year, 41!!! Talk about heating bill going up.

High gas prices killed the economy period, not just the auto manufacturing sector. And there is still a lot of debt to be paid off lingering on credit cards all across the nation.

The UAW is killing their golden goose of the auto industry...and their greed of the short term will end their jobs in the long run.

Henry Waxman is not going to allow drilling anywhere in America. He is not going to allow nuclear power in America. He is not going to allow coal use in America.

What the hell don’t we understand here?

We need to do the paper protest.

Send a copy of your gasoline bill to Henry Waxman along with a big note, "Pay this Waxman, Bail Me Out, Drill Here, Drill Now."

If enough McCain voters did this, it would get his attention.

Let's spread this idea to our conservative friends!

The DNC leadership, majority whip, and senate majority leader are going to have a “little talk” with this guy and straiten him out on how things really work. Many of the “moderate/conservative” Democrats get this “little talk” every two years.

Absolutely. My hubby works in the industry and they are laying off, or firing, folks every day. I think the low price may be a play, by OPEC, to finish off our efforts at energy independence. They can afford to be patient, unlike African and Central/South American sources.

Before long all of the experienced oil folks will have retired, or found other careers, and we won't have the experienced people we need to locate, produce, or refine our own oil resources even if we we're allowed to utilize them. The Dems are still so stupid they can't understand that we are going to need oil UNTIL they can get their so-called alternative energy sources in operation!

Exactly, just like those “conservative Dems” that got elected last mid-term election. If yoou’ve noticed, they have all disappeared, replaced by a bunch of Reid/Pelosi clones. It doesn't take long, no sir, not long at all!

Of course it was the High price of Oil that caused this whole mess ,Mortgages ,cars ,Food . It didnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that with 4 dollar a gallon gas that heating our homes ,Getting food to market ,transporting EVERYTHING was going to skyrocket.
Variable rate mortgages took off causing foreclosures ,unemployment .Just think of all the nice government giveaway programs costing BILLIONS and all the drop in tax revenue from the collapsing economy and all those Bureaucrats running around now trying to save their jobs .
I work in field service on Office machines and I go into State offices everyday , I quote repair costs on the equipment on the spot and the typical scene now with the State is the cost of repair is 400 dollars ,a new machine could be purchased for 300 but the State because of cutting back in these hard times says do the repair we cant buy anything new now that things are tight !
You wonder why we are in the mess we are in ,Multiply this a million times a day, times 20million Govt employees

“If enough McCain voters did this, it would get his attention.”

Waxman would simply instruct his admins to throw out all mail.

He will never read it. He is in a safe district. This is why we must have term limits.

“send a copy of your gasoline bill to Henry Waxman”

I’m pretty sure one would be thrown in jail and be put on an enemy of the state list—the weasels are VERY sensitive and would consider these actions threats. You KNOW how sensitive they are when the other side is complaining about their actions.

Correct the high oil prices sucked the marrow out of the economy.

And the bone marrow transplant is years away. I guess we'll ride bikes and eat by candlelight until then!
