Somali Pirates Hijack Ship, Some Crew Escape (ANOTHER ONE!!)
The Voice of America ^ | November 28, 2008

Maritime officials said pirates off the coast of Somalia Friday hijacked another ship and released one that had been held for more than two months.

Officials said three crew members escaped as pirates boarded the Liberian-flagged chemical tanker Biscaglia.

A warship on patrol near the ship sent a helicopter to intervene. It arrived after pirates seized the ship, but rescued the three crew members who had jumped into the Gulf of Aden.

At least 25 other crew members are still on board the hijacked ship. They are reported to be mostly from India and Bangladesh.

Also Friday, Kenyan authorities said Somali pirates released a Greek ship they captured in September. The ship's 26 Filipino crewmembers are reported to be in good health after two months in captivity.

Somalia pirates are holding about 15 ships, including a Saudi tanker carrying $100 million worth of oil. Pirates are demanding $15 million for the tanker.

An international coalition of warships patrols the area off Somalia to prevent hijackings.

Pirates based in Somalia have made the waters off East Africa some of the most dangerous in the world.

I wonder whether a nice inexpensive minefield would stop them or whether they could sail over it in wooden ships from which to launch pirate speedboats. We could lease the materials needed to that great (and I bet willing!) naval powerhouse Ethiopia for a nominal fee.

Idiotic question: Does Somalia have a government? A police force? An army?

No. A couple of regions in Northern Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland, have formed sort-of-organized statelets with governments.

The last sort-of-real government was the fundamentalist Islamic Courts, which actually managed to stop the piracy for the six months they were in power, until overthrown by the Ethiopian invasion.

They probably were ordered by the captain to stand down and try to resolve things peacefully, and told him “Sure we will, we'll be down there swimming towards that helicopter”

They need to send a fleet of Q-ships there to sucker some pirates in for a little lesson on “why pirating can make you wind up dead”.

See my post #25, that is for you too!!!
