An Ugly Attack on Mormons

An Ugly Attack on Mormons

The easiest targets for an organized campaign against religious freedom of conscience.

By Jonah Goldberg

Did you catch the political ad in which two Jews ring the doorbell of a nice working-class family? They barge in and rifle through the wife’s purse and then the man’s wallet for any cash. Cackling, they smash the daughter’s piggy bank and pinch every penny. “We need it for the Wall Street bailout!” they exclaim.

No? Maybe you saw the one with the two swarthy Muslims who knock on the door of a nice Jewish family and then blow themselves up?

No? Well, then surely you saw the TV ad in which two smarmy Mormon missionaries knock on the door of an attractive lesbian couple. “Hi, we’re from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!” says the blond one with a toothy smile. “We’re here to take away your rights.” The Mormon zealots yank the couple’s wedding rings from their fingers and then tear up their marriage license.

As the thugs leave, one says to the other, “That was too easy.” His smirking comrade replies, “Yeah, what should we ban next?” The voice-over implores viewers: “Say no to a church taking over your government.”

Obviously, the first two ads are fictional because no one would dare run such anti-Semitic or anti-Muslim attacks.

The third ad, however, was real. It was broadcast throughout California on Election Day as part of the effort to rally opposition to Proposition 8, the initiative that successfully repealed the right to same-sex marriage in the state.

What was the reaction to the ad? Widespread condemnation? Scorn? Rebuke? Tepid criticism?

Nope.

The Los Angeles Times, a principled opponent of Proposition 8, ran an editorial lamenting that the “hard-hitting commercial” was too little, too late.

DU: Please show me where the word Trinity appears in the KJV of the Bible...

LC: Show ME where ANY of your Temple Rites® appear in ANY of your Scriptures!

Actually, all the pieces are in the scriptures, they are just not put together for the same reason Jesus spoke in parables.

In my opinion you're getting too hung up on this deification vs. sanctification argument. The writings of those mentioned make no mention of either, rather just about becoming Gods. Nothing to really twist there. Again they comport nicely w/ the scriptures from the Bible I cited as well.

Please cite the scriptures that talk about becoming a God as a part of sanctification rather than deification & how we really don't become Gods regardless of what the scriptures say.

You throw out terms such as heresy & heretical freely but yet still give no definitive explanation as to why you're right & they are wrong. You basically just say you're right without backing up why. If you know you're correct, how? Stating opinions isn't delineating how you know you're correct. Surely there is a definitive reason to back your beliefs rather than just conjecture & calling people heretical that don't believe as you do.

I have no problem with condemnation or persecution of vandalism. My point is that the constant and repeated whining on FR by mormons and mormon defenders is notable, since they entered into this battle and now that they have won, expect the losers to bow and scrape and kiss their rings....There will be more videos and quite probably movies in the next couple of years. Mormonism is going to get more publicity than bargained for, and I expect court cases regarding the seperation of church and state also.... Mormons love for being seen as "persecuted" will be well-fed.

Can't really comment about constant whining, due to both lack of knowledge and disinterest. In the case of these ads and service disruptions, the "whining" becomes legitimate complaint, imo. I acknowledge at best 5% of the posts on the thread might relate to that issue. But it's not something that should be tolerated.

“Actually, all the pieces are in the scriptures, they are just not put together for the same reason Jesus spoke in parables.”

Wait... Mormon temple rites are intentionally obscured, but present, in Scripture to fulfill prophecy and to help Jesus avoid being crowned King of Judah on the spot?

Is this a popcorn thing?

DU: Mormons believe in the Godhead which does appear there.

LC: The GODHEAD with TWO physical bodies?

Understand that I am not attacking your religion, but you asked a question about logic.

Was Jesus' resurrection a hoax or "Temporary" in some way? (I don't believe it was) If it was "real" then Jesus has a body now.

If Jesus has a "Father" who is separate from him as he says in John 17:20-22, then in order to be in the express image of God Hebrews 1:1-3 God must have an image.

Was Jesus misleading us when he prayed to and spoke of God his father in the third person?

Was God deceiving men when at Jesus' baptism spoke from the heavens, descended from the dove and was being baptized all at the same time?

Mormons Do more than just believe in Jesus, we "Believe Jesus" we actually believe what he had to say, he speaks of God as his Father, so that's who God is. He speaks of God int eh third person, so they are not the same person, Jesus Gives an analogy that compares his oneness to that which is to be had by the apostles, so that is the oneness that he has with the father. Throughout the Bible, God marries men and women declaring that they should be "one flesh, telling the church that they should be one

You and yours tell me that I am mistaken, I respect your opinion, but I know that my salvation depends on actually understanding Jesus and his relationship with God. I know this, Because Jesus Said:
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Not that I need to know him, but God and him. Elsie, I beg you for your souls sake, stop believe in Jesus Christ only and start believing what he had to say in the Bible and when you do, then and only then are you ready for the Book of Mormon and the Further light and knowledge he has waiting for you.

Lurkers, I ask you to read the Bible and see if what Jesus said is really compatible with the Nicene Creed, please pray about it to God, and see if he will testify to you of the Nicene Creed, then pray about the God Head being two prefect personages and the Holy Ghost being one in heart might mind and strength. pray, and then believe God when he answers.

Dang!

You are RIGHT!!

My apologies.

Those who insist on being that crass give FReepers a bad name and are as bad as the Palistinians.

Logic 101...

If A=B

Then if B=C

Then if C=D

Then D=A

Am I to assume that you disagree w/ the scriptures I posted as well?

You must be thinking of THESE folks:

TRUTH IGNORED

Smith, Young, Taylor, Pratt, Snow, Kimball, Woodruff ...

 1 Timothy 3:2-3
 2.  Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
 3.  not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

1 Timothy 3:12
A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children and his household well.

 Titus 1:6
An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.

BEHOLD!!!!  The Restorative Power  of the Book of Mormon!!

THE BOOK OF JACOB
THE BROTHER OF NEPHI
CHAPTER 2

24 Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.
25 Wherefore, thus saith the Lord, I have led this people forth out of the land of Jerusalem, by the power of mine arm, that I might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the fruit of the loins of Joseph.
26 Wherefore, I the Lord God will not suffer that this people shall do like unto them of old.
  27 Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;
28 For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts.
29 Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes.
30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.
31 For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands.
32 And I will not suffer, saith the Lord of Hosts, that the cries of the fair daughters of this people, which I have led out of the land of Jerusalem, shall come up unto me against the men of my people, saith the Lord of Hosts.

The Bible was written before any of the creeds that you believe in.

And WHICH 'creeds' would that be?

Their purpose is to destroy our religion...

Gee...

Ol' Joe managed to do THAT all by himself!!

http://scriptures.lds.org/en/js_h/1/19#19
17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother,
“I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.”

And with NO data to back him up!

WHY doesn’t the great LDS Organization...

It’s a puzzle to you because your first two statements are false.
If you want to know why, I suggest you ask them.

... if you just left others alone.

Fat chance!

2 Corinthians 11:12-15
 12.  And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about.
 13.  For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.
 14.  And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
 15.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

Actually, all the pieces are in the scriptures, they are just not put together for the same reason Jesus spoke in parables.

No doubt ALL of the 'words' can be found there.

Just add them together any way you want.

Sounds just like Joseph Smith's 'translation' of the Golden Plates.
