Review: 'Earth Stood Still' falls apart
CNN ^ | Fri December 12, 2008 | Tom Charity

(CNN) -- Call it the second coming.

Klaatu the spaceman first visited these parts in Robert Wise's 1951 Cold War classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still," when he threatened to blow us all up unless we stopped threatening to do the job for him.

Klaatu wasn't exactly greeted with open arms back then -- he was shot and hounded for his troubles -- and if the earth has moved on over the past half century, you wouldn't know it from the trigger-happy welcoming committee that surrounds his luminous snowball of a space craft in New York's Central Park.

Where sci-fi films in the 1950s used to see red(s), today they go green. Directed by Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") and scripted by David Scarpa ("The Last Castle"), "The Day the Earth Stood Still" 2.0 ditches the Cold War theme. Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) means to save the planet, but war isn't the problem. Mankind is the problem.

I just posted this on another thread but:

the first movie had a robot named GORT who simply impersonated Sen. Al Gort from TN.

the remake is about the Al Gort initiative on Global Warming and happens to have a robot named GORT.

Real progress...

It’s snowing in New Orleans too...

;-0)

“Another Hollywood movie about how bad AmeriKKKa is”

I am sick of the anti-American brainwashing. Kids are sucked into it and go away ashamed of the greatest nation the world has ever produced.

The global warming crap is just that.. crap. It does not detract from the effects or the acting or the production values.

Sure it does... When you put crap into something, you get crap out. It's based on crap...Based on that, it's crap.

Hard to believe they're allowed to butcher good classics with their politically correct garbage. It really ruins it.

They could never come close to the real classic, the one and only, "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

The original is one of my all time favorites. You can’t remake what was done right the first time. Give me Michael Rennie anyday. His Klaatu had class. One scene I would have cut is Patricia Neal freaking out with Gort. Ah, but then it was the ‘50’s and the film needed a screaming female...

Day After Tomorrow was the worst movie I’ve ever seen in my life— irrespective of its environmental message.

I like this from Peter Suderman's review of the film:

The movie's environmentalism is as wretched as its script is dumb, essentially positing that humanity might deserve to be wiped out for failing, in some totally unexplained way, to take care of the planet. It's a dismal message in a dismal movie, and only Reeves's trance-like, deadpan turn as Klaatu provides any fun. Everyone else involved ought to be embarrassed at both the story and the message, which isn't just pro-environment, but anti-human — which may explain why only an evolved being like Reeves survives unscathed.

It sucked. We just saw it and it was a real snoozer. The PC reeked but that wasn’t the problem. My 12-yr old daughter said it had no “oomph”.

Flat, boring, stupid movie. And we like Reeve and any kind of sci fi.

Do NOT recommend.

Keanu Reeves is no worse than other actors.

Are you kidding? If Reeves were any more wooden he'd have roots.

He is....without a doubt...the worst, most wooden actor I have seen outside of a porn movie.

"I’ve never, yet, seen a remake that was as good as the original movie."

Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" should be far superior to all the lame attempts to date (especially if he is able to re-use the "Shire" location used in LOTR -- and produces up to the LOTR quality).

Get real. The only reason anyone watches these flicks is the special effects. "Acting," "Production values?" Fuhgeddit. How were the catastrophe scenes?

In my humble opinion, the only remake of a Hollywood classic that was better than the original was “The Thomas Crown Affair”...

Well, and of course the early-80's remake of "The Razor's Edge".
