Olympia, WA (AHN) - Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire has declared a state of emergency in the state after winter storms continued to bring frigid temperatures and heavy snow.
"A number of counties and cities are struggling to meet the problems posed by this month's onslaught of snow and winter weather," the governor said in a statement on Christmas Eve. "Snowfall has reached record or near-record level in 30 of the state's 39 counties."
"Many communities, especially in eastern Washington, are expecting as much as a foot or more of additional snow this holiday weekend. This proclamation will enable the state to respond quickly to local requests for emergency support and assistance arising from these new storms," she added.
Gregoire's announcement authorizes the use of funds and other resources in responding to emergencies. It also activates the Washington National Guard and the Washington State Guard. The governor also issued a 10-day waiver of limits to the number of hours truck drivers can haul bulk milk from farms to dairies.
"Dairy cows continue to produce milk, which must be delivered to the dairy for processing within strict time limits. The waiver... will help ensure the delivery of this important commodity during the continuing storm, and will help the dairy industry avoid losses of nearly $1 million per day if the milk is lost," the office of Gregoire said in a statement.
Bitter weather over the weekend delayed flights and closed roads across the nation as winter storms blanketed northern states. The National Weather Service issued a number of warnings for Washington on Thursday.
"Snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected along the east slopes of the Cascades by early Christmas morning," the agency said. "In the mountains... accumulations of 12 to 18 inches will occur... Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency."
“Al Gore? Please pick up the white courtesy phone in the lobby...”
boy oh boy. this global warming is really rough.
but, maybe a few democrats can gather in a circle and intellectualize some more so that everyone might feel better. (liberal, democrat, psychotic-punk intellectualizing; the opiate of the masses.)
IMHO
Seattle refuses to use salt; roads “snow packed” by design (safe roads bad for the environment!)

...The icy streets are the result of Seattle’s refusal to use salt, an effective ice-buster used by the state Department of Transportation and cities accustomed to dealing with heavy winter snows.
“If we were using salt, you’d see patches of bare road because salt is very effective,” Wiggins said. “We decided not to utilize salt because it’s not a healthy addition to Puget Sound.”...

Was this...woman born in Washington? Someone should have told her it sometimes gets like this in winter.
That sharp peak in the global temperature was the sudden rise found just at the end of all the interglacials. May be some smaller peaks, but for the most part we are on a steep slide back into the Ice.
Isn’t Puget Sound full of SALT WATER? ;)
But a chemical de-icer is OK to use.
Is that Mrs. Wiggens, Mr. Tudball?
No. It's "Mrs. ahhhWiggins". :)
4 to 8 inches of snow is a mere dusting.
But the Seattle administrators refuse to use salt on their streets. They fear putting salt into Puget Sound. Streets are snow packed and sewers are filling up with sand. The fools need to freeze over.
Yup, wonder what the global warming crowd is going to say then Washington State is mostly under a 100 feet of ice and snow (In about ten years). Sad part is all the damn liberals will be moving south, that sucks.
Wikipedia article on State Defense Forces.
You knew, of course, that I wasn't referring to you as Mr. Tudball.
That being clarified, we can't get salt into Puget Sound, now can we? We might upset the fragile balance of Nature.
“sad part is all the damn liberals will be moving south...”
maybe you should change that to oozing south. (with a little molting along the way.
You said — “But the Seattle administrators refuse to use salt on their streets. They fear putting salt into Puget Sound. Streets are snow packed and sewers are filling up with sand. The fools need to freeze over.”
It’s not a problem. I’ve been up in the Northwest for a long time (not there now, though). All you do is put on chains and you *chew up* the ice with no problem... LOL..
It’s just a matter of having your car geared for the weather. They don’t need any salt on the roads. In fact, I wouldn’t want salt rotting out my car’s underside, anyway. But, chains..., they do the job just fine and you can get up steep slopes (of whatever street you’re on) with no problem...
Uh, yes. But that does not matter to the envirowackos and liberals who run this state. Because reality means nothing to them.
