Ideology Steers RNC Chairman Race
The Hill ^ | December 27, 2008 | Reid Wilson

A battle for the soul of the Republican Party has spilled over into the contest for national committee chairman, as conservative members are prodding candidates to shift their way.

Now that the presidential campaign is over and the congressional leadership elections are settled, conservative activists are turning to the race for chairman as their next chance to shape the party.

Already, one candidate has come under fire for his association with a centrist organization, while a group of prominent RNC members is set to put others through an exhaustive test of their personal conservatism.

"It's important that the chairman be in line with the principles of the Republican Party as expressed in its platform, and that means the person is a conservative," said Indiana National Committeeman Jim Bopp, a prominent Republican lawyer. "It's important that the chairman wants to unite all strands of conservatism, because that's where we went wrong. We went wrong by not being faithful to our conservative principles."

Bopp, along with nearly half the voting members of the committee, has established the Conservative Steering Committee, which will meet with candidates Jan. 6 and hold a straw poll to determine whether each candidate is conservative enough to serve as chairman. The group is semi-exclusive, with some RNC members invited to join while others have had to ask to be let in.

We went wrong by not being faithful to our conservative principles.”

How very well put. The wallet stays closed as long as McLame, Powell, and the likes have any influence.

They can call when they are conservative. Again.

I’m also for Ken Blackwell although I’d like to hear what all the candidates have to say in that Jan. 6 meeting.

**They can call when they are conservative. Again.**

The Republican’s behavior over the last 8 years say that ...”I’m NOT WELCOME at the GOP!”

With that said, not only has my wallet closed, my GOP membership card has been RETURNED. IF I cannot admit without embarassment that I’m a GOP, I am now an INDEPENDENT CONSERVATIVE!!!

This is exactly my own position, and has been since the Contract With America went south some years ago. (Let's hear it for Caller ID!!)

There is nothing centrist about someone who wants to promote abortion rights or sexual activism. It is one thing to say I do not feel comfortable or compelled to fight the battle but another thing entirely to be leading the charge the other way.

Whitman’s group is the problem. They aren’t merely centrist on social issues they would have tax payers funding abortions, and promoting the gay agenda as well as move us back towards the “compassionate conservatism” crap that led us to the sad state we are in.

There should be a litmus test and that is one of integrity and honor and one can not have that and promote the ugly behaviors and procedures that are destroying not only the unborn and the weak but destroying the sense of humanity and decency that places man above the common animal. We should not aspire to the lowest common denominator. We should not seek to make those who choose bad decisions feel better about them. There is no compassion in becoming a nation of enablers.

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. We need a strong leader who will face off against Liberals, the MSM, and RINO’s. If not, our beloved country will be no more. It’s that dire and that imperative!!!

Bopp is a sellout. He’s Romney’s straw boss.

Wake up conservatives. They’re setting you up for more mere lip service.

I say throw out the whole concept of the RNC. I don't trust these elitist in the party to select my leader.

They remind me of the leaders of the Presbyterian Church, completely out of touch with the grass roots of the organization.

Who holds the charter for the Republican Party and has anyone ever seen it?

Overstated.

Remember, even after the soi-disant Republican Richard Nixon, who instituted wage-and-price controls for god's sake, not to mention Watergate and Gerry 'wipe my drool' Ford's pardon, the Republican Party re-captured the Presidency with Ronaldus Magnus. Of course, 4 years of Jimmy 'I never saw a oil crisis I didn't like' Carter had something to do with it.

I'm not sayin' Zero will govern down to the standards of Carter, but ya gotta admit the possibility is there!

The question is, can we survive that long?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
