WILLIE BROWN: Caroline Kennedy is in for a rough ride
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/28/8 | Willie Brown

Posted on 12/28/2008 9:20:02 AM PST by SmithL

After a lifetime in the warm privacy of Camelot, U.S. Senate candidate Caroline Kennedy of New York is getting her first turn in the media barrel. And the ride has not been comfortable.

Reporters have been going through all of quiet Caroline's voting history and all of her financial records to see whom she has been giving money to, and more importantly whom she has not been giving money to - namely the local Democratic Party.

It reminds me of my first run for mayor when the San Francisco media demanded to see all of my tax returns.

For the longest time I steadfastly refused, telling my staff, "For years everybody has been thinking that I have a lot of money. Why disabuse them of the thought?"

Finally I gave in and made all my records available for reporters at my office for as long as they wanted. The only condition was that the records stayed in the office.

They came. They looked, and there was no big story. No big headlines. No big scandal.

My finances were that boring.

Heck, back then I was still using the short 1040 tax form.

Kennedy will weather the storm, just like Barack Obama did throughout his media-blessed campaign.

The U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton is Kennedy's unless she decides to withdraw. No way the Democratic governor is going to turn down what amounts to a presidential request.

The ride could be worse, especially if Uncle Ted drives.

The amusing thing...is when 2012 rolls around and Biden retires...and Caroline is announced as the VP...we are basically looking at a Democratic party fund-raiser....and not much of anything else. She isn’t even twenty percent the public speaker of Obama (with his telepromters).

Hey! She wrote 2 books, was a lawyer, a parent and went to Harvard!

----That's exactly the same experience list that Barack Obama has!!!

Back in 1964 LBJ ran for president and Bobby Kennedy ran for senator from New York.

It was said that New Yorkers could not stand the loud mouthed uncouth LBJ. But in 1964 LBJ got a lot more votes in New York than Bobby Kennedy.

The Kennedy myth about the popularity of Camelot is just that a myth. When a little over a year after JFK’s assasination, LBJ did better in liberal new york than Bobby, that tells us a lot about the real Kennedy popularity.

JFK was in Florida and then in Texas in 1963 because polls showed he was going to lose both states in 1964. The media said his death made the Kennedys a huge political force. If that is true how come LBJ got more votes in New York than Bobby.

It was common knowledge that LBJ hated John and Bobby Kennedy. It did not hurt LBJ in 1964.

To be fair, Obama at least had some state legislature experience and had actual constituents voting for him; even if he did get the others thrown off the ballot, at least there was a ballot.

She’s having a cake walk compared to Gov.Sarah Palin.

Where’s the dirt on Caroline’s children? Oh, I suppose they are saints and have never been associated with those other hell raising Kennedy clan offspring???
Afterall, how many stories did you read about drug use by John Jr. before his death? He was pure as the driven snow while there was a chance he might run for an office.
The media have hidden all the Kennedy warts for many, many years.

May I suggest she is going to be pushed into the media spotlight and raised to a high level before the 2012 election just to “try” to discourage Gov. Palin from running?

I was an old LBJ hater going way back but after reading reading Caro's biography, The Path to Power, I gained a grudging respect for the man.

JFK had the presidency handed to him, while LBJ had to fight his way there from scratch.

Caroline Kennedy of New York is getting her first turn in the media barrel.

I'm curious about the metaphor here. Surely Willie Brown isn't referring to the old joke I remember about one's "turn in the barrel".

The Democratic party forgives a lot of things, but they WON”T forgive a rich person who won’t fork over mega-money to the Democratic Party - especially if they want favors!

Still, the press is vetting her more than Obama, probably because she is white and they are racists.

How else would you interpret the phrase?

"Just remember, try to stay away from the bung hole!"

Willie Brown is the Mark Steyn of the left. He has something that nearly all liberal commentators don’t. A sense of humor.

JFK had the presidency handed to him, while LBJ had to fight his way there from scratch.

True, but from having grown up in LBJ’s Texas, we knew that LBJ could always mobilize the deceased voters of Zapata County (who showed up to vote alphabetically no less) when he knew just how many votes were needed.

CK is not a frontrunner for anything. No poll, no primary, no opinion, just MSM hype.

Its Paterson’s call. If the Gov. wakes up one morning and decides its going to someone else (a Cuomo for example). CK is done.
