It died when they stopped letting them say it in schools.

17 of the 20 (85%) states receiving the most federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Red States. Here are the Top 10 states that feed at the federal trough :

States Receiving Most in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. D.C. ($6.17)
2. North Dakota ($2.03)
3. New Mexico ($1.89)
4. Mississippi ($1.84)
5. Alaska ($1.82)
6. West Virginia ($1.74)
7. Montana ($1.64)
8. Alabama ($1.61)
9. South Dakota ($1.59)
10. Arkansas ($1.53)

In contrast, of the 16 states that are “losers” — receiving less in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes — 69% are Blue States that voted for Al Gore in 2000. Indeed, 11 of the 14 (79%) of the states receiving the least federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Blue States. Here are the Top 10 states that supply feed for the federal trough :

States Receiving Least in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. New Jersey ($0.62)
2. Connecticut ($0.64)
3. New Hampshire ($0.68)
4. Nevada ($0.73)
5. Illinois ($0.77)
6. Minnesota ($0.77)
7. Colorado ($0.79)
8. Massachusetts ($0.79)
9. California ($0.81)
10. New York ($0.81)

Two states — Florida and Oregon (coincidentally, the two closest states in the 2000 Presidential election) — received $1.00 in federal spending for each $1.00 in federal taxes paid.

Actually, you have it backwards

Really. So NY state will be bailed out. CA most likely will be next. Where do they fall on color map? The tax generating states have always had their funds diverted to the dependent states. Again, this is what led, over many decades, to the first Civil War in the US even though the majority of America believes it was over slavery. That was a Lincoln myth, to whom Obammy aspires.

While I agree with him in principle,I must disagree with his premise that immigration is the primary cause, its the creeping socialism thats plagued the US since the onset of the "New Deal" thats brought us to this sorry state of affairs.

America was founded by immigrants, populated to a great extent by immigrants, and if whats now come to be referred to as liberals (socialists) would allow the time honored, established and effective system of acculturation, immigrants (border control accepted) would not be a problem now.

Place the blame squarely where it belongs, the socialists, who in their religious like fanaticism, have maintained a steadfast refusal to give up the failed ideology of the two deadliest failed philosopher wanna be`s of human history, Carl Marx and Joseph Engels. Its this rogue`s gallery of assh*les, past and present, that have given us our unfortunate future.God help us.

Arizona and Oklahoma increased their conservative majotities in the state houses. Texas has some great laws encouraging free enterprise.

Maybe we can form a coalition and annex New Mexico.

I agree succession is out of the question. This was settled in 1865. Only a moron would support succession. We have our differences, but we are all Americans.

In general New York generates a huge amount of taxes far more than most states...so that’s ridiculous.

No we aren’t... not anymore. There are Americans and then there are those that were fortunate enough to be born here that care nothing about their country and only care about what they can take from her.

Did you see his map showing how the US would look after the breakup? It's a hoot and proves he's a lunatic. Click here and scroll down to the bottom of the article to see it. (Sorry, I'd post it directly for all to see, but wsj.com is one of those must excerpt sites and afaik that means I can't post graphics from there.)

Here’s the Tax Foundation link:

Bingo! If NY and CA go down, then the money dries up for the dependent states. Look at where the federal money was spent during the Depression. It wasn’t in states where there was plenty of private funds — remember, Empire State Building and Rockfeller Center were both built with private money at the height of the Depression. The Federal money went to rural communities via TVA and other programs.

Have the dollar collapse and bank runs...you'll see chaos.

During hurricane Ike here in Houston, it convinced me that any area or America as whole could be plunged into chaos by power outages, lack of food shipments, or fuel shortages.

Trust me on this, people were getting real weird.

Even saw several people dukin it out on the side of the road in a traffic jam due to no traffic lights.

Not out of the realm of possibility. Not likely, but certainly possible.

much of what was special about this country is now gone. I don’t think Farah’s article is that far-fetched, though it would certainly take time.

What was so special about this country is that we accepted the hungry, weary, etc. etc. Now those people are the people who will destroy us, either by terrorism or soaking our healthcare/welfare system. And these people walk freely across our borders with backpacks, then sue us -- and win -- if one of them dies or is shot by a border agent. Then we can lock up the border agents to make serious statement about just how diverse-omania we are.

Your point concerning immigrants isn't necessarily incompatible with Farah's.

That a solid majority of 1st generation immigrants to this country feel the self-hating democrat party better represents them isn't even debatable.

As you implied, it is a matter of too many too quickly with no time for assimilation.

Whatever the reason, the effect is Americans have less in common today and that by definition is not good for national unity.
