“IN FOCUS: PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST”

Note: The following text is a quote:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2009/01/20090102-3.html

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
January 2, 2009

President’s Radio Address

In Focus: Middle East

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Over the past week, I have been monitoring the situation in the Middle East closely with the members of my national security team. Secretary Rice is actively engaged in diplomacy. And I’ve been in contact with leaders throughout the region — including the King of Saudi Arabia, the King of Jordan, the President of Egypt, the President and Prime Minister of the Palestinian Territories, and the Prime Minister of Israel.

This recent outburst of violence was instigated by Hamas — a Palestinian terrorist group supported by Iran and Syria that calls for Israel’s destruction. Eighteen months ago, Hamas took over the Gaza Strip in a coup, and since then has imported thousands of guns and rockets and mortars. Egypt brokered a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, but Hamas routinely violated that ceasefire by launching rockets into Israel. On December 19th, Hamas announced an end to the ceasefire and soon unleashed a barrage of rockets and mortars that deliberately targeted innocent Israelis — an act of terror that is opposed by the legitimate leader of the Palestinian people, President Abbas.

In response to these attacks on their people, the leaders of Israel have launched military operations on Hamas positions in Gaza. As a part of their strategy, Hamas terrorists often hide within the civilian population, which puts innocent Palestinians at risk. Regrettably, Palestinian civilians have been killed in recent days.

The United States is deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation facing the Palestinian people. Since Hamas’s violent takeover in the summer of 2007, living conditions have worsened for Palestinians in Gaza. By spending its resources on rocket launchers instead of roads and schools, Hamas has demonstrated that it has no intention of serving the Palestinian people. America has helped by providing tens of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid, and this week we contributed an additional $85 million through the United Nations. We have consistently called on all in the region to ensure that assistance reaches those in need. And as I told President Mubarak, America appreciates the role Egypt has played in facilitating the delivery of relief supplies in recent days.

In addition to reducing humanitarian suffering, all nations must work toward a lasting end to the violence in the Holy Land, and a return to the path of peace. The United States is leading diplomatic efforts to achieve a meaningful ceasefire that is fully respected. Another one-way ceasefire that leads to rocket attacks on Israel is not acceptable. And promises from Hamas will not suffice — there must be monitoring mechanisms in place to help ensure that smuggling of weapons to terrorist groups in Gaza comes to an end. I urge all parties to pressure Hamas to turn away from terror, and to support legitimate Palestinian leaders working for peace.

In the days ahead, the United States will stay closely engaged with our partners in the region, in Europe, and in the international community. My Administration will continue to keep the President-elect and his team informed. And America’s objectives in the Middle East will remain clear: We seek security and peace for our allies, the free people of Israel. For the Palestinian people, we seek a peaceful and democratic Palestinian state that serves its citizens and respects its neighbors. For all in the region, we seek an end to terror. And we seek an enduring peace based on justice, dignity, and human rights for every person in every nation of the Middle East.

Thank you for listening.

Hamas hacks Israpundit

Pamela at Atlas Shrugs reports that Hamas has hacked Israpundit’s web site (see picture here).

If you go to the site you get this ‘’HAMAS OWNS YOU”and the html immediately hijacks your internet browser by raising an exception window which takes priority over the main web page. When you answer the prompt , it immediately raises another high priority window and another and another etc....

I wonder how many more of us may be in for such treatment. Ted, hope you get your site up again soon.

Sorry President Bush. That hasn't happened for centuries past and won't happen for centuries in the future. Secretary Rice can diplomacy her self to death and it will make no difference.

IMHO, and I say this with deep regret, the only solution is the elimination of Muzzies.

There is mounting “international calls for a ceasefire by Israel”. I just have a very simple question. WHY!

This is ridiculous. Gaza is only 58 square miles. About the same size as Staten Island, NY. How in blazes can they set up a rocket launcher without getting spotted? One or two planes should be able to observe the entire Gaza Strip.

WARDEN MESSAGE: U.S. CONSULATE GENERAL ISTANBUL ATTACK

U.S. Embassy Ankara released the following Warden Message on January 2.

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and Palestinian rocket strikes into Israel. The escalation of hostilities within the Gaza Strip has resulted in public demonstrations throughout Turkey and the potential for continued demonstrations and disruption of traffic in the country. In southeastern Turkey, demonstrations have already taken place in the provinces of Hakkari, Bitlis, Elazig, Mardin, Gaziantep, Diyarbakir, Antakya, Sanliurfa, and Siirt. Today a demonstration is scheduled to take place at the U.S. Consulate in Adana.

We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid demonstrations, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times.

Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. Embassy’s website (http://turkey.usembassy.gov/) and the DOS Bureau of Consular Affairs’ website (www.travel.state.gov), where current Worldwide Cautions, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information can be found. The U.S. Embassy also encourages U.S. citizens to review to “A Safe Trip Abroad,” found at http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html , which includes valuable security information for those both living and traveling abroad. In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. In Turkey, travelers can contact the U.S. Consulate in Adana at 0322-346-6262 during and after business hours.

2009 WARDEN MESSAGES

Warden Message – Possible Demonstrations in Old City and Environs Friday, January 02, 2009
January 2, 2009

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens of the possibility of a large demonstration Friday, January 2, 2009, in the Old City and other possible demonstrations throughout East Jerusalem in protest of the ongoing situation in Gaza. There is expected to be a heavy police presence in and around the Old City throughout the day. The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem has recommended that its employees avoid the Old City and its environs all day on Friday, January 2, 2009.

Access restrictions to the Haram Al-Sharif/Temple Mount and a heavy police presence may spark disturbances at entry points, to include the Damascus, Herod’s and Lion’s gates, in addition to random security checkpoints setup throughout the areas leading to the Old City.

Heightened awareness should continue to be practiced when approaching established and random security checkpoints throughout the Jerusalem area, where crowds and the possibility of spontaneous disturbances may occur.

To contact the American Consulate after hours regarding an emergency situation, please call 02-622-7250. For routine inquiries, please email the American Citizen Services Unit at JerusalemACS@state.gov.

“Most stores in southern line of fire closed”

SNIPPET: “Very few store owners open their businesses Tuesday following fatal night of missiles in Ashdod, declaration of special situation in home front. ‘I have no choice; if I don’t open I might as well throw everything to the garbage,’ says greengrocer”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Ashkelon’s Hutzot Shopping Mall seemed empty on Tuesday morning. Almost all the stores were closed, although the mall remained open and security guards stood at its entrance.

One of the only businesses which were open was the New Pharm drugstore, but with not one shopper in sight.

Very few business owners opened their stores across the city. The few who did open were owners of stores selling basic commodities.

Shimon Shakir, who owns a fruit and vegetable store in a commercial center in southern Ashkelon, told Ynet, “People hardly come to the store, but I have no choice. What else can I do? I sell vegetables, and if I don’t open I might as well throw the goods to the garbage.”
