Controversial Issues Pose a Challenge for Obama and Pope

VATICAN CITY -- In the 24 years since the United States and the Holy See established full diplomatic ties, relations have never been closer or warmer than during the administration of President Bush.

The two sides broke over the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, but Bush's personal esteem for popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and his agreement with Catholic teaching on such controversial issues as abortion, embryonic stem-cell research and same-sex marriage, have fostered a special rapport. Bush has met six times with the leader of the Catholic Church, more often than any other U.S. president.

The relationship between the Vatican and the White House is bound to change this month with the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, whose support for abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research has drawn denunciations from a number of church leaders. Yet informed observers agree that both sides have strong incentives and opportunities to avoid conflict and build on the recent history of collaboration.

First of all, all religions are partly political. Second - because of history, tradion, and geography, the Catholic Church is a state. The Vatican used to be a whole lot bigger than it is now. The Pope did act as king and even had armies. Saying its wrong doesn’t change the facts. The Pope has a lot of influence over a lot of people in every country on the planet. So why not diplomatic relations?

I say if Obama wants to be the Messiah, fine. Let’s curcify him.

The “Duh!” award should most likely be awarded to the headline editor at the Compost. More often than not the headline submitted by the reporter isn’t used.

Somehow, crucified by his own before April just doesn’t fit the template for Zero.

Now, now...you can “curcify” him all day long and you’d just be wasting your breath! Not worth the tax he’ll probably put on the air we breathe....

Can someone explain why the Pope or the Catholic Church has “diplomatic ties” with the US? It’s not a country, it’s a religion. What other religious group has “diplomatic ties” to the US? Does the Eastern Orthodox Church have “diplomatic ties”?

The "Catholic Church" does not have direct diplomatic ties to the U.S. Vatican City, a sovereign nation under the control of the Catholic Church, maintains diplomatic ties with other nations all over the world.

The United States Embassy to the Holy See, is located on the Aventine hill in the beautiful Villa Domiziana, which was built as a private residence in 1953. In 1994 the United States government acquired the property as the new chancery for the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See.

Formal diplomatic relations with the Holy See were established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II. The mission works in partnership with the Holy See on global issues including HIV/AIDS, world hunger, religious freedom and human rights. As a global entity, the Holy See is influential on many issues and has far-reaching influence in even the most remote corners of the world.

It’s time the Pope did a Exorcism next time Obama visits the Vatican. It’s more than the garden-variety Evil that needs to be dealt with there.”

I truly hope that the Pope never lets NObama inside the Vatican.
I don’t want any of the Muslim world to think that the sane world accepts any of the tenents of the Muzzie world.

Let’s pray that the pope exposes the corrupt Messiah. Many Catholics are clueless, just as many Jews are clueless, about the evil that is the Muslim Messiah’s intentions in conjunction with Liberal RATS in Congress. Evil is as evil does.

“When Obama confronts a controversial issue, he votes “present”. I am wondering what he will do when he doesn’t have that option.”

I don’t think there is any need to wonder. Obama has made it very clear that he will not protect innocent life in cases of abortion or stem cell research. I don’t know what his stance on euthanasia is. Read up on his support for FOCA. Obama would be a far, far better president if he was unwilling to confront this issue. He isn’t. He plans to make major changes in US abortion law.

Pastor Paul Blair declared that Barack Hussein Obama is an enemy to the unborn babies of the world.

I want the Pope himself to say it, so that we can all be unified against this horrific evil known as Obama.
