Wall Street’s Socialist Jet-Setters

The “Citiboobs” — as The New York Post, which broke the news, calls them — watched as the car chieftains got in trouble for flying their private jets to Washington to ask for bailouts, and the A.I.G. moguls got dragged before Congress for spending their bailout on California spa treatments. But the boobs still didn’t get the message.

The former masters of the universe don’t seem to fully comprehend that their universe has crumbled and, thanks to them, so has ours. Real people are losing real jobs at Caterpillar, Home Depot and Sprint Nextel; these and other companies announced on Monday that they would cut more than 75,000 jobs in the U.S. and around the world, as consumer confidence and home prices swan-dived.

In an interview with Maria Bartiromo on CNBC, Thain used the specious, contemptible reasoning that other executives use to rationalize why they’re keeping their bonuses as profits are plunging.

“If you don’t pay your best people, you will destroy your franchise” and they’ll go elsewhere, he said.

Hello? They destroyed the franchise. Let’s call their bluff. Let’s see what a great job market it is for the geniuses of capitalism who lost $15 billion in three months and helped usher in socialism.

We certainly have told the auto’s what they can and can not do...the idea being they took government money which many on this forum supported...you can not have a double standard. You take the money, you are no longer independent.

When E.F. Hutton folded...the joke was what do you call a former employee of E.F. Hutton...hey waiter. These companies caused this and must take their lumps sames as anyone else...in fact more lumps are in order.

No way, he looking our for them...they are undoubtedly union thugs...destroying the company and all (sarcasm). Why it will be better if the whole company went away if we could rid ourselves of the union scourge just like the Auto Industry...Maybe, a European plane manufacturer could go to Alabama and get Shelby to subsidize them; he offer a really good deal, I hear...and call it an American company.

I remember when all those Southern States bribed Jap auto makers to locate plants in the rural south

Now..... I have a problem with union workers. The ones in government. They are the real thugs. They have extorted outlandish salaries and benefit packages and even worse, their employers will never go out of business due to this union extortion
Freepers are so benighted they don't know that union membership is way down from what it used to be. But that's not good enough for libertarian phonies at this site
The only place where union membership is growing is in government and that's on all levels. Government unions used to be outlawed

I agree with you completely. They hate the auto union which is basically on life support while ignoring the government unions...much more powerful. The libertarians as you call them have stated on other posts...that getting rid of the big three-America’s last manufacturing industry of any size is worth it to kill the unions...they don’t understand that if Obama depended on the unions for his election...say hello to President McCain...The Wall Street bankers...those masters of the universe are often Democrats which is kind of funny really.

For your amusement... a thread that makes the point that the stimulus package (assuming there is one) should not have a buy American’ clause because we might offend our buddies in Europe and elsewhere...a trade war-OMG! The horror, why we might bankrupt the country...but wait, we are bankrupt. LOL

I am an engineer...hope my talents can be put to good use in rebuilding this country and earn a living at the same time

I sure hope so!

I had thoughts of suicide (make it look like an accident)in order to make sure my family at least had insurance money...

Most states and many policies have a clause that has pay out for suicide if the policy is more than 2 years old.

The problem is, many people have their life insurance through their employer, so it's a gamble to hang on until a layoff notice arrives. To take advantage of the insurance investment, a person has to take action prior to getting notice--a notice that might not have been coming. Similar to the way no assistance in suicide leads people to take their lives while they still can do it themselves instead of waiting, this setup sadly promotes premature deaths.

We are not weak, pitiful people...we can and will get through this together as a family. We will do exactly that.

Please don't think that suicide indicates a weak, pitiful person (I'm not sure if this was what your wife said or you). Frankly, some of the strongest and most admirable people I've known have gone that way.

But you highlight one of the very important things--your family. While there is responsibility inhernet in providing for a family, they can also help relieve some burden on you via mutual support. Being able to discuss it with your wife so openly is a blessing, too.

Sometimes it takes more courage to keep on living then to give up-[...]

Definitely.

Of course, many decide that there's not much point in living, but that's where your family gives you a good reason to go on.

There have been some highly publicized suicides from economic news, but they aren't the only cases out there. I know of a 40-something single man who has no family (parents, etc.) who decided recently that it wasn't worth it without a job, but it's not newsworthy like the CA murder-suicide.

And suicide for economic reasons is far from new. In fact, if you look in history, some fathers have sold tickets to watch their suicides, with the proceeds going to the fheir survivors!!

[...] certainly the easy way out.

Rarely is it easy.

It's a topic too little discussed openly. Everyone wants to avoid it and pretend it's not there, until someone dies and they all stand around and wonder why the deceased never told anybody what he was thinking!

‘Most states and many policies have a clause that has pay out for suicide if the policy is more than 2 years old.’

Thanks for your thoughtful post...It was very helpful...this is why I love FR...they have people like you...LOL Today is the day, I find out...but I will stay strong. My neighbor hung himself in October his kids were grown. His wife had died or perhaps he was divorced-very private person we talked about sports and such but nothing personal...he was only in his late 40’s or early 50’s. He got laid off from Adelphi so you are right about family pulling you through when you lose your job.

God too obviously. I’m Jewish and have been to a few Catholic Masses with friends. They were the new ones in English. If I were Catholic I would find a church that does the Latin mass. Get lost in the mystique and drama. Greek Orthodox would be the same. There is a world above& beyond our burdens

With today’s economy church attendance is up
