Boehner to GOP: Vote against stimulus
The poltico ^ | 1-2709 | PATRICK O'CONNOR & JONATHAN MARTIN

It was the love affair that could never be, President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans.

The two sides came together en masse Tuesday for the first time since Obama took the oath of office. Despite the niceties, both sides walked away spurned.

In many ways, Obama told the assembled Republicans everything they would want to hear, according to people in the meetings.

He promised to make tough spending choices in his first budget blueprint — “everyone will have to take a haircut,” he said. He told them he wouldn’t increase the size of government just to increase the size of government. He even teased House Minority Leader John A. Boehner about his golf swing.

Likewise, Republicans left the meeting with kind words for the president — but still resolved to oppose him on the floor Wednesday when Democrats bring his massive economic stimulus plan up for a vote.

Beneath the polite give and take between the new president and the newly disempowered Republican caucus, there was a sense that Obama’s honeymoon had already begun to ebb. For the first time, it seems, congressional Republicans, shut out of power and seemingly cowed by the harsh verdict of voters and wild popularity of the new president, are finding their voice, rallying in large numbers against the centerpiece of Obama’s agenda.

It would be nice if they were resolved to oppose him. They haven’t so far.

We’ll see if the Republicans grew a spine, or if this is just a dream sequence.

Congress has already proved they can’t provide decent oversight for these ridiculous bailouts ——— no more stimulus fiascos.

If the GOP votes for a bill with ACORN money in it, they are finished as a party.

Why wasn't Boehner talking like this when Paulson bailout came to a vote????

Because Bush was a Republican.

There is no principle involved in any of these guys votes, its just oppose the other guy.

Of course he should have been saying this to Paulson but its easier to keep the home team fans happy than lead on principle

I’ll believe this when the vote is recorded in the Congressional Record.

The GOP needs to just say, NO! Let the ‘RATS have full credit for the coming disaster (they created, IMHO). The ‘RATS wanted total control of the country. They’ve got it. Why be token GOPers just going along with this fiasco in a phony “spirit of bipartisanship.” STAND UP AND SAY NO!!!!! Remember what the ‘RATS and their media toadies always say, “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.” Let’s be patriotic and say, NO!

Because the Paulson bailout was sold to the American people as loans to be paid back with interest. I remember hearing that we, the people, would actually likely be making money on the bailout from September. This new bailout is just a free money giveaway to the people who sent money to 0bama’s campaign. We will be paying for it for decades.

“everyone will have to take a haircut,” he said. He told them he wouldn’t increase the size of government just to increase the size of government."

We'll see.

Can the GOP figure the language out?

Take a haircut?
Whether you want/like it or not!

The gummint will be swollen with 'legitimate' , absolutely needed and we'd better do it NOW, program employees. No large budget because no one will be making a hell of a lot.

"Boehner grows a pair of gonads"

Not too big a pair though. He didn't want to re-engineer his golf swing.

It was understood that, at all costs, the banks could not be allowed to fail. The operation was sloppy and the results have been less than perfect but it looks like most of the patients will live.

I wish the banks would take a haircut, instead they’re off buying private jets with our tax dollars.

Why wasn't Boehner talking like this when Paulson bailout came to a vote????

HE WAS! Boehner called the original TARP deal a “crap sandwich,” a phrase Michelle Malkin has used incessently since then for the whole bailout extravanganza.

We need to cut our GOP leaders some slack. The media does the best job they can to make them look like fools and even mostly-smart folks can look bad when the press is after them.

So folks, please dont shoot first and ask questions later. If you arent sure, google and/or call them first to find out their real position.
