Mayor Bloomberg Declares War On ... Salt
wcbstv ^ | 1/28/09 | Marcia Kramer

Singer Jimmy Buffett will never find his "lost shaker of salt" in New York City or any other place in the country if Mayor Michael Bloomberg has his way. The mayor is waging a war on salt and he wants food manufacturers and restaurants to join his army … or else.

It's ironic that the war on salt began on the very day the city was spreading tons of it on the streets to fight a snow storm, but in Bloomberg's view there is good salt … and bad salt.

City officials said that people don't realize the salt content of the things they buy in the supermarket.

Mayor Bloomberg Declares War On ... Salt
War on Smoking;
War on Food Fat;
War on Guns.

...while the War on Terror is suddenly a non-issue, so much so that the term cannot even be spoken. According to Obama's press secretary, they prefer to call it a "challenge." But dietary salt? Liberals have finally found a danger to the republic worthy of battle.

If Herr Bloomberg wants to use the power of the state to wage war on hidden substances in our food, I'd be cool with a war on melamine.

Bloomberg was not the first to declare the War On Salt. The first shot fired was in Britain in 2008.

"People will just put on more salt if they want more. In fact, we have had some people unscrewing the lids to do so."

Sounds like divine rights of king, especially the fact that he wants to run for a third term. God help us all if he does.

If they care, it's on the label. All they have to do is look.

Maybe Mr. Moron Mayor had a bum meal here.

In my NYC days it was a popular lunch spot for the expense account crowd. Rather unusual in that all the waiters were Caucasian.

Nah, it started with the War on Drugs. Once we set the precedent that the government gets to decide what adults may put in our own bodies, this was the predictable result.

"Nanny state. We don't need any more nanny state people can take care of themselves. We don't need the government to take care of us..."

And yet, your fellow New Yorkers continuously vote your nannies into office time and again.

New York State is one of the biggest exporters of salt there is. While he’s only a twit in NYC, he still is part of the problem, buying so much of the stuff.

Other states need to sue NY for exporting the stuff and causing dangerous conditions there.

Unintended consequences

Bloomberg-like autocrats want to use taxation to encourage the sale of diet drinks compared with sugared drinks.

Yet, I think I read the other day that mice given access to sugar substitutes actually eat more.

With this in mind...

Will salt restrictions make it necessary for some patients to lower their dosage of high blood pressure medication?

Will people who are taking potassium supplements know how much to reduce their intake?

New York is screwing the rest of the USA in many ways. This is nothing new.

I bet that some huge percent of the bailout money is going to New York. Certainly the $18 billion in ill gotten bonuses are mostly all going there. A huge chunk of the stimulius will go there, too, because they get more FedGov matching funds for welfare than any other state.

FDR was the Gov. of New York and ever since the New Deal we (out here in sagebrush country) have been paying tributes to our Lords in New York.

Thomas Frieden, the city's health commissioner, said he wants manufacturers and restaurants to join the war on salt voluntarily. If they don't, the city could pass legislation making it the law.

Oh, fer crying out loud.

Sounds just as voluntary as a military draft, and a voluntary tax system
