What A Dope: Michael Phelps caught with cannabis pipe
News of the World ^ | 1/02/2009 | Georgina Dickinson

THIS is the astonishing picture which could destroy the career of the greatest competitor in Olympic history.

In our exclusive photo Michael Phelps, who won a record EIGHT gold medals for swimming at the Beijing games last summer, draws from a bong.

The glass pipes are generally used to smoke cannabis.

And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER.

GOLDEN BOY: Phelps at Beijing Those dreams seemed the last thing on his mind when he puffed from the bong during two days of partying with students last November, a quiet time in the swimming calendar when athletes would not expect to get tested for drugs.

One party-goer who witnessed the star’s behaviour told the News of the World: “He was out of control from the moment he got there.

“If he continues to party like that I’d be amazed if he ever won any more medals again.”

Phelps’ aides went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture.

If he continues to promote the lifestyle of a pothead they should take his gold medals away.

Good to see a few of the anti-pot dorks on FR are still around.

“Good to see a few of the anti-pot dorks on FR are still around.”

I don't know that many people that associate being pro-marijuana with being a responsible patriotic American conservative.

I consider it the #1 drug responsible for the dumbing down of America.

The good news is Phelps admitted his mistake.

He should do some PSA ads educating the general public on the dangers of smoking pot to redeem himself.

I love the fact that a DUI wouldn’t deny him endorsement deals but hitting a bong will.

Apparently in this society, driving drunk is seen as a lesser evil than just smoking weed. Amazing.

He gave a very motivational interview during the Olympics, I even taped it to show to my 12 yr old grandson & he was impressed by it, now he will wonder WHO HE CAN BELIEVE IN!!! Really sad, his mom is probably devistated!!!

Are you going to let your grandson know about the DUI he got after the 2004 Olympics? Yikes, WHO CAN HE BELIEVE IN!!!

He sure can swim!

However, he may just qualify along with the likes of Michael Vick and Pacman Jones for out and out stupidity!

Just goes to show that swimming does not increase your ability to make value judgements.

Maybe his cell mates ("Fat Fingers aQeder" and "Men Only Bubba") will leave him alone because of his gold medals!

/sarcasm

Or as Bugs Bunny used to say....."Whada Maroon!"

Oh, experimenting with pot is on the same level as raising dogs to rip each other apart and carrying a gun into a stip club. There’s some logic and reason for ya.

I’m terribly dissapointed in Phelps. With his lung capacity he should be using an eight footer.

OK, I guess that’s it. But I’m still disappointed because finally in some ways MD has a champion, but then, raised in a liberal state, what do you expect?

Phelps had been arrested after the previous Olympics for drunk driving - and maybe also just being busted at a “party” (someone said the latter on radio, but I don’t recall it).

Add to that I never liked the eyes on Phelps - something there I don’t trust. At the very least looks like an arrogant smart-ass (pompous about his ability, perhaps?), at most like a druggie (same kind of washed-out losing-it vacant look as Klintoon).

Oh, because EVERYONE loves drunkeness (”parties”). Well, 95% of society - especially the younger society. They think it’s harmless, et al. They also think it’s fun - why? Why are “parties” consisting only of getting drunk? What is so fun about that? The puking? Yeah, I find puking really fun.

Personally I’m 1 of the 5% who doesn’t ever “drink”. Never, except for communion wine (and yes, I had some sips of dad’s beer as a child). Not only do I abhor drunkeness, but I hate the taste of the stuff. It’s awful. Don’t get how anyone thinks it tastes great.

Given he’s been arrested for drunk-driving, I have doubts about his ability to “never do” things “again”.

They are not personal role models, nor should they be. And I think he maybe right. One can admire and try to emulate the athletic ability, but any personal morals have to begin at home. And then, young people will experiment. It doesn't mean they will end up living under a bridge.

Your brother is right, each current "hero's" heroic accomplishment is in his area of specialty and only there, and let's stop at that. Their lives are likely to be a mess, just like everyone else's. I bet you could find dirt in Captain Sully's life history, too, but why look?!

In the meantime, Michael Phelps is a featured speaker (along with Colon Bowel, Steve Forbes, Rudy and Zig Ziglar) in a traveling circus advertised in full page ads and called GET MOTIVATED BUSINESS SEMINAR. ONLY $4.95 to attend ("Or Send Your Entire Office for Only $19!"), and undoubtedly a come-on to buy more goodies. But the question for me is what is it that I could possibly learn from the likes of Michael Phelps?

Ahhhhh....why should I even have to explain it to you?

They are/were both "stars"....both worth millions....both knew it.

And from an extreme lack of judgement and the ability to think....they both blew it away. It's gone!

I never said anything at all about the "crimes" being equal....just the stupidity.

Sheeeesh....get a life!

“Would you have kicked William F Buckley or Milton Friedman off of this site?”

Remember, they spent most of their careers in the pre-Moral Majority era. Before we voted for Ronald Regan to help us take back the country from the far left dirtbags.

"So, conservatives don’t/can’t smoke weed? Guess that memo never made its way to me."

Generally, conservatives possess the morals to know right from wrong. Obviously, there are quite a few who don't. More than I realized at least.

"Anyway, a college-age kid is blowing bong hits. Stop the presses."

You're right. We've fallen so far as a nation that the only story that will "stop the presses" at this point is one about a college-age kid who doesn't use drugs.

It looks like doing the right thing and living your life morally gets you branded as a freak in 21st century America.
