What A Dope: Michael Phelps caught with cannabis pipe
News of the World ^ | 1/02/2009 | Georgina Dickinson

THIS is the astonishing picture which could destroy the career of the greatest competitor in Olympic history.

In our exclusive photo Michael Phelps, who won a record EIGHT gold medals for swimming at the Beijing games last summer, draws from a bong.

The glass pipes are generally used to smoke cannabis.

And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER.

GOLDEN BOY: Phelps at Beijing Those dreams seemed the last thing on his mind when he puffed from the bong during two days of partying with students last November, a quiet time in the swimming calendar when athletes would not expect to get tested for drugs.

One party-goer who witnessed the star’s behaviour told the News of the World: “He was out of control from the moment he got there.

“If he continues to party like that I’d be amazed if he ever won any more medals again.”

Phelps’ aides went into a panic over our story and offered us a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture.

Looks like him to me.

Our Olympic athletes are supposed to represent US. They are what we want our children to aspire to. They display all of the good characteristics that we have desired in ourselves, such as, wholesome goodness, honesty, good sportsmanship, healthy life style, etc.

So, we need to ask ourselves, do we want our children emulating Michael "The Bong" Phelps, or do we want our children to be examples of our core principles?

“So, he was pictured with a pipe and that negates everything he’s ever done and everything he hopes to do in his life? Give me a break.”

Ditto that. But hey, folks have to have someone to hold up as not being perfect so they can feel like they are. ;)

Hmmm...it doesn't look like him.

I was just thinking the same thing. Isn't Michael Phelps' nose bigger than this guy's?

Athletes, actors and musicians forget that they are paid far out of proportion to actual value because people spend discretionary dollars on a whim. They are the most disposable of heros.

Michael Vick went from the penthouse to the big house in one off-season. Depending upon the amount of play this gets, it will total his advertising value, which is the only value an Olympian has.

Phelps behavior, though isn't all that unusual. The regime required to get as good as he is at what he does almost requires an unbalanced binge personality.

I'd never really realized this until I worked with a guy who was on the University of Texas Golf Team. The guy drove me crazy talking about golf (I don't play.) He took a part time minimum wage job at a country club because he got to use the course for free (membership was something like 20,000 a year.) I got to where I'd hit the timer on my watch whenever we had a conversation. We never got past 2:34 before he was talking about golf. He could start on the first hole and describe every stroke in an entire round, and would if you couldn't get away from him. I asked him why he didn't turn pro. He told me he didn't like golf enough to put in the effort necessary to be successful as a pro.

So now white children have a role model whose a marijuana smoking Olympic Gold medal winner.

While black children have a role model whose a corrupt coke-head living in the White House.

I sure miss John Wayne.

I understand your point. I won’t damn him for trying pot (plenty of good young folks have done that before), but I do wish he hadn’t put himself in a situation where it would hit the press and harm his reputation.

I don’t think it looks like him, either.

“I don’t think that’s him in the picture, and even it if it is, who cares. Hes a kid with millions, and gold medals out the wazoo, hes set for life!”

Nice. You really DO know whats important in life, don’t you, Mr. Strawberry?

BTW, this IS a Conservative forum, ya’ know. The Bong crowd is down the hall to the left, says “DU” on the door.

True, but Mary Lou came through okay. She’s married with kids and doing ads for GNC, goes to the UT home games and still has a gymnast’s body.

Tough thing about growing up today. There are fifty cameras in every room. When Phelps shows up, everybody’s clicking. I’ll bet forty kids took photos with their cell phones at that party.

I don’t “damn” him at all. But I am embarrassed by his actions. He is no longer worthy of being an American Olympian, IMO.

BTW, it appears that this wasn’t his first “tryout”, either. LOL

Actually, it has been the serial affairs with confirmed low-lifes and hookers that has tarnished his star. He is a young thrill seeker who is not smart enough to realize he is ruining his image.

He’s disgusting.

That’s for sure. He’s going to really regret making such an error in judgement.

That picture does not look like him-the jaw is not long enough. Given that this story is out of a UK paper, the 2012 Olympics are in London and Phelps is scheduled to compete, I am holding my judgment on this story.

How very sad in so very many ways.

Why? I say good for him.

If he continues to promote the lifestyle of a pothead they should take his gold medals away.

How is he promoting it because some jerk snapped a pic with his phone and sold it to the media?

Why take his medals away? Was there a stipulation before the olympics that you forever had to refrain from breaking silly laws the rest of your life?

Now that it is over and he has all this idle time he has nothing to accomplish.

Like most people he has probably smoked an occasionaly joint since high school, but will go on Oprah and play it up as "poor him" after he won those golds.

Would you have kicked William F Buckley or Milton Friedman off of this site? True conservatives as they were, they did not when you using the government to enforce your moral whims on free people.
