College degrees do “open more doors” but I don’t think it makes too much difference *where* you go to college, and it is very affordable to attend community college for 2 years and then transfer to a 4-year state college after that.

I totally agree that 2 years in a community college is an affordable option, and more young people should try that if funds are tight.

But I think the days of a college degree "opening more doors" are gone. There are a lot of high priced institutions of higher learning that grant degrees of dubious value. Fashionable majors like Women's studies, Black studies, multiculturalism, and some literary majors have limited value outside academia.
