A state lawmaker said Friday he wants to reclaim Utah's lands and resources from the federal government so the public can use them for recreation and energy development.
Rep. Michael Noel, R-Kanab, said he's declaring another Sagebrush Rebellion. The original Sagebrush Rebellion took place in the 1970s and 1980s, when a coalition of mining and grazing interests pressured federal policy makers to cede greater control of federal lands to state and local authorities.
Noel said that Utah can "take care of itself," and that the federal government shouldn't be allowed to regulate what the state can do with its own resources.
"States created the federal government," he said. "The federal government did not create the states."
Hundreds of recreation activists, including Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone, rallied in the Capitol on Friday, saying they want multiple-use access for federal lands.
"No way they're going to kick us off of what we own," Malone said.
Brad Johnson of Murray grew up in Utah riding all-terrain vehicles on the state's trails. But he said many of those trails have been closed.

Well, I'd say County Commissioner Dick Carver, Wayne Hage, the people of Jarbidge, NV and the farmers and ranchers of Klamath Falls, OR & CA were also chapters of the "Sagebrush Rebellion" in the 1990's, as well as Catron County, NM earlier on.
The "War On The West" with it's "Rural Cleansing" and with it's fight against totalitarian GovernMental EnvironMentalists is still set to see several more chapters of individualists with property and resourse rights defending their God-given constitutional inalienable RIGHTs!!!
Amen. The military installations should be bases that are not gigantic. Bombing ranges should be leased from the state.
I hope Utah has the guts to take this all the way and that other states follow - ASAP. This is using the Constitution and states rights to beat Alinsky and Cloward-Piven - this is what we need to do.

Same thing with hikers, mountain bikers, property owners, prospectors, pilots, scuba divers, boaters, kayakers the list goes on and on. We're always under siege and it's about to get worse.
Urban dwelling socialists view the rest of us as nothing more than illiterate hicks who must be stopped from harming "mother earth."
Make no mistake about it, these left wing extremists view us as undesirables just like the Nazis viewed other people as undesirable.
Maybe it is time to remind the Urban Dwelling Socialists of the origins of their food.

Provided, That nothing herincontained shall be construed as recognizing or rejecting the propositions tendered by the people of California as articles of compact in the ordinance adopted by the convention which formed the constitution of that State.

Speaking of state rights, don’t all the states have an interest in the property in question because the property in question is actually owned by the United States (the States in union) with the Federal Government acting as their agent?
And it’s true the property is stolen, but it was stolen by the United States (the States in union with the Federal Government acting as their agent) from Mexico back about 1848.
As much as I love this guy, he better be careful with that line. While it is true for the original 13 colonies, UTAH was granted Statehood by the U.S. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT in 1896.
I never thought I could. Matheson is darn near a Republican, and the Republicans that have gone against him lately have been complete losers. But no more. He pretended to be a fiscal conservative, but when the “stimulus” came up, he rolled over for Her Highness Nancy.
No more. I am determined to find a solid conservative who isn’t a lunatic that can run against Matheson. He has 80% approval in a very red state, but there has to be someone who can take him out.
I'm of the opinion the states' protestations will have a much larger impact on the dolts in DC than we conservatives, even in large groups could ever have. Without taking up arms anyway. Which is another arrow in the states' quiver should they choose to implement it -- state militias. Will it come to that? Will we be ready if it does?
George, do you have something akin to a 10th amendment or states rights ping list? I'm not aware of one and Army Air Corps suggested one a couple days ago. If there is enough interest I think it would be a good idea and would keep Freepers engaged and hopefully involved in these type developments. I am all but convinced states' efforts in reclaiming their sovereignty may be our last chance to rein in the feral beast. AND if there is not already a ping list in place, I would be willing and (mostly) able to perfom that function.
