SURPRISE! Dems Break Promise: Stimulus Bill to Floor Friday
Human Events ^ | 02/12/2009 | Connie Hair

Posted on 02/12/2009 6:51:09 PM PST by cc2k

In a press conference Thursday, the House Republican leadership spoke candidly about being kept out of the House-Senate conference on the Obama-Pelosi-Reid so-called “economic stimulus” bill. They confirmed they had not yet seen the text of the bill as of 4 p.m.

<SNIP> The fact that the Demos have now broken their promise to have the public able to see the bill for 48 hours may drive more Dems into the Republican camp.

“[I] don’t know, ‘cause they haven’t seen the bill either,” Boehner said.

“The American people have a right to know what’s in this bill,” Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind) told HUMAN EVENTS after the press conference. “Every member of Congress -- Republicans and Democrats -- voted to post this bill on the internet for 48 hours, 48 hours ago. We’ll see if the Democrats keep their word.”

That should be illegal.
There should be a rule forcing the review of any money packages over 100 million not doing with war for at least a week IMO.

Do we really know what's in the final version?

Of course not! It is tine for the Republicans to up the ante for the sake of America. They should put a speech together tonight, including this fact,

“Every member of Congress -- Republicans and Democrats -- voted to post this bill on the internet for 48 hours, 48 hours ago. We’ll see if the Democrats keep their word.”

...invite other Democrats who believe in standing by their word/vote, then all walk out of the House together. Do not bother to vote. They need to get the attention of EVERYONE what is going on here.

They are going to ram this through without letting the public see it at all.

The public??? They're gonna ram it through without most of Congress getting to see it, let alone study it.

If Steele can't run with this, he's a fool.

You may be right, I certainly am not sure.

I still think they should walk out rather than allow an semblance of Bi-partisanship in this Stinkeroo.

How serious is this? More serious than that which King George and Mr. Pitt had wrought upon us. If this bill, this disaster gets pushed through and our children’s children are indentured into the next century without this bill having been read...I can only see the GALLOWS for Pelosi, Reid and Obama.

This is Tyranny!!

well, to be accurate, the 5 day review was “before a signature” and that on non-emergency legislation. He has reneged on that twice so far but it wouldn’t apply here since he cried “emergency.”

There is funding for social programs to bust families. But this time, families of the good ol’ boys are the targets. ...and probably some anti-Second-Amendment laws.

The Republicans in the Senate ALL ought to boycott, and not show up for the vote, claiming (legitimately), they were NOT included in the negotiations and they had not had time to read the conference-prepared Bill, so voting "blind" is not what they're there for.

Shove the Stimulus right up their butts, knowing they haven't read the thing either, and are just doing the bidding for The Messiah and The Party.

Close the book on the United States of America. It’s finished.

I disagree. Stand and demand a voice count and every Republican very loudly gives his or her “NO!”

Disgusting.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, IF the Republicans had acted this way when they controlled Congress, we would not be in this situation because they would still be in control of Congress.

If the Republicans don't start acting like an true opposition party, the Democrats will be in charge for a very long time.

I wonder how many of THEM have READ it in its entirety to KNOW what’s in it other than what they’ve been told. I think every Senator and Congressman should have to initial the entire bill on EVERY PAGE (just like we do on mortgages) and then post the scanned copies for all constituents to see. I know it’ll never happen - but maybe a seed is sown for the future.

Public comments now being accepted about Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and SCHIP (Sunlight AFTER Signing)
Sunlight Before Signing: Too often bills are rushed through Congress and to the president before the public has the opportunity to review them. As president, Obama will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days.

During his campaign, President Obama promised:

Sunlight Before Signing: Too often bills are rushed through Congress and to the president before the public has the opportunity to review them. As president, Obama will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days.

Well, when the “new” whitehouse.gov web site went up on January 20th, there was a “Five day review” page on the site to fulfill this promise.
Then, Congress passed the “Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009,” and nothing appeared on the whitehouse website about it. The bill never appeared on the “five day review” page, and was signed into law only 2 days after it passed the Senate.
Then, on February 4th, the SCHIP Reauthorization Act, as ammended and passed by the Senate, also passed the House. Later that same day, President Obama had a signing ceremony for that bill. Again, there was no posting on the whitehouse.gov web site.
Well, these two bills are finally on the whitehouse.gov website, and public comments are being accepted.
The Ledbetter Act is there in it’s full text. Click here to go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing_room/LillyLedbetterFairPayActPublicReview/ and leave a comment.
And there are links to a couple versions of the SCHIP bill. Click here to go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/SCHIP_Public_Review/ and comment on the SCHIP Reautoriazation act.
“Sunlight after signing” wasn’t exactly what he promised.

How can anyone vote on a bill they havent seen. Republicans should just walk out and leave them with no Quorum.

They don't have enough spine.
