To my way of thinking this is a state issue, not a federal issue at all.

On what authority does the federal government have to decide how much you pay to drive down a state built, maintained and plowed road?

There are still some governors out there with the testicular fortitude to tell the federal government to blow it out their *ss, I believe and hope mine would be one of them.

Let’s put the monitors on state and government automobiles.

Any mileage over the distance to and from work is charged at the rate of $1 per mile.

So if one asserts that it’s silly to introduce “the last days” and/or the apocalypse and/or “the beast” and whatever other doom and gloom biblical prophecy into otherwise sensible political political/taxation/liberty discussions on FR (or elsewhere), then you are saying that person is arrogant or a sinner or a “scoffer”?

I’d say that’s an attmpt to chort-circuit rational political discourse.

And of course it never answers and in fact evades the issue at hand.

Modern cars won’t run right with the speedometer disconnected. The transmissions won’t shift properly, etc.

The feds can’t even build an immigration tracking system

True, however, keep in mind that the feds don't want to build an immigration tracking system. Now collecting money...that's a whole different ballgame.

If you have seen federal projects from the inside you’d recognize how ridiculous and undoable and imppossible this GPS scheme actually is in the real world of federal projects and contracting and staffing.

It’s literally impossible.

Think it through.

It reaches too deeply into the pocket of Americans, and is too intolerably Orwellian.

Zero has already figured out that the backlash would be too great, and disavowed this tax scheme yesterday.

Think it through.

This is new times. The lefties just spent a trillion bucks doing nothing. Another trillion to track the movements of its subjects is trivial.

We are all ready paying by the mile the more you drive the more gas you use the more tax you pay.

That is correct, but now the electric and hybrid cars will have to pay more taxes too. I am totally against this, but there are some people who think this will be "fairer" for most commuters. I think it is BS.

I didn’t say it was “unwantable”.

I said it is impossible.

Because it is.

Ask anyone you know who is vaguely acquainted with federal technology projects and contracts.

Even if they did it (which they won’t) it would take 10 years of incredible waste and damaging political flak to reach the conclusion that it was wasted money and effort.

It won’t happen.

Add that to the nationalization of banks and you have:

“Mr. Freeper, you have already driven your maximum amount of miles today, and are heading in the direction of a restricted area. Please turn around and go home immediately. If you do not comply you will have a fine of $1000 immediately deducted from your bank account and your credit and debit accounts will immediately be suspended for 3 days.”

I agree, it is probably too difficult to impose, but that doesn't mean that the government will not try. I remember the pollution control checks from the past, where you had to get your car tested prior to renewing its plates. All old polluters were given an exemption and newer (less polluting) cars were required to pay $25.00 to undergo the test. The program was unworkable, but it was still imposed.

I can see this administration attempting to install a system for newly purchased autos only - giving an exemption to existing autos.

Yes. It can be scoffing.

Do you agree that it’s possible to talk about the last days in a serious conversation?

More to the point, do you agree that it’s possible to use relevant quotes from all sources, including biblical sources, to make points about serious situations?

For example, if I were to say, “That’s Armageddon-level behavior.” does that mean that I’m necessarily predicting that some event is “the” Armageddon?

The Democrats are overreaching.

Mark my words...all those independent voters that turned out for Obama are going to turn on him - BIG TIME - in 2010. It’s already happening, and the bloom is off the rose.

I was once part of the hand-wringing, worried about what the government is proposing to do instead of what they are actually doing crowd. The only place that gets us is to the MD's office for ulcers.

I read yesterday that this porkulus bill will outspend FDR by a long shot. Folks are worried about a mileage tax when they should be worried about a dollar bill being worth fifty cents and needing a wheelbarrow full to buy a loaf of bread.

Chicago in July, baby.
Chicago in July.

Anyway, is this proposal to replace the gas/diesel tax? Or in addition to the gas/diesel tax?

That's a bit like asking if a national sales tax, or a VAT will replace the income tax or be in addition to the income tax, isn't it?
