Well I heard one state was proposing 1 cent pr .25 mile, which would work out to 4 cents per mile, and for 10,000 miles that would be $400.00 per year.
Now this is a punishment of conservatives, because if you look at the voting map the RED STATES are more rural, and the BLUE STATES are more larger cities and closer together. That means the Conservative States will pay more mileage taxes, since people like Biden who ride the train and use more public transportation will pay none. Inner city people on welfare and subsidized housing rents will pay none.
Now add that to the irresponsible people who will get their mortgages reduced as well as payments/interest, it looks like the conservatives will be paying the bills for the others, and that people is REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH.
I’ll gladly pay the tax if libs will line up at quarter mile increments.
Anyway, is this proposal to replace the gas/diesel tax? Or in addition to the gas/diesel tax?
I know, I know ... its a rhetorical question and the later question is the answer, but I just wanted to make sure.
are the one who now want government control over their and our lives? Phony SOBs.
I think we all ready have a mileage tax, it’s called the gas tax.
We are all ready paying by the mile the more you drive the more gas you use the more tax you pay.
The dems and the wackos just want to have more control and raise more money.
Will the toll roads then be free of tolls? No matter how they try to do it someone will come up with a way to go around it.
It is perhaps not so much punishment of conservatives as it is the normal process of consolidating communist power. Restricting the physical movement of the population is imperative. Mobility makes for more efficient opposition, and there is a lot of opposition to BHO in the heartland.
And the “greenies” thought they’d save money buying hybrids!
Their lower gas consumption means the ‘gubmint’ isn’t getting enough tax revenue now!
Suckers!!
Once the libs start thinking about this, they may back away from it or alter it. If I understand the current proposal correctly, Big, evil, diesel or gasoline swilling SUV’s would pay the same as a Prius........can’t have that, now can we?
If they continue down this path, the price charged per mile will be based on vehicle weight....mark my words.
I think what’s really important to ask why is it so important to tax by the mile rather than by what they’ve been doing, by gasoline? Taxing by gas used is more in line with their supposed green concerns, isn’t it? Also, it is currently the type of nickel-and-dime tax that is less obvious to people and so they put up with it more readily. I mean, what’s the point to the cost of all that information-gathering anyway? To me, it’s just like the toll transponders: it accomplishes two things:
1) it makes it easier to exempt those they want to exempt—whether by income, age or some other favored-selection process, and
2) it gives them an excuse to put a gps device in every vehicle driven.
This latter point to me is probably the greater one, as it provides more government control and tracking. Though they claim they won’t track by individual locations now, isn’t that likely soon enough to be justified by various crime-fighting and safety claims?
(That it equally includes battery-driven cars is not legitimate either, as they could simply come up with another use tax for such as the volume for that builds.)
I hope the morons do this! Talk about backlash.
To tax a thing is to control a thing. They are wanting to establish control over mobility. This is a direct attack on freedom, and it should be met as such. It is the equivalent of border guards, visa checks, and stamped papers.
Because, how do they track your mileage? They monitor your purchases or your auto’s little black box.
If America doesn’t rise up and reject this en masse, then the next thing will be reeducation camps.
I guess their aim is to have us all riding bicycles. We can even wear cute little Chairman Mao caps as we do so.
My problem, however is... what if I’m riding my bicycle, and I drop my package full of energy-saving (and mercury laden) fluorescent light bulbs that I’m bring home for my cubicle? Of course, I’ll agree to pay the $20,000 environmental cleanup fee to the Government (tm), but I’m afraid they’ll catch me with my plastic water bottle.

It is becoming obvious there will be a war between socialists and Capitalists. The socialists will not let the capitalists be. They are pushing too hard.
Let’s put the monitors on state and government automobiles.
Any mileage over the distance to and from work is charged at the rate of $1 per mile.
The Democrats are overreaching.
Mark my words...all those independent voters that turned out for Obama are going to turn on him - BIG TIME - in 2010. It’s already happening, and the bloom is off the rose.
