Despair Sets In With America On A Fatal Arc
IBD Editorials ^ | February 23, 2009 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 02/23/2009 5:53:43 PM PST by Kaslin

An increasing number of recent letters and e-mails from readers strike a note, not only of unhappiness with the way things are going in our society, but a note of despair.

Those of us who are pessimists are only a step away from despair ourselves, so we may not be the ones to offer the best antidote to the view that America has seen its best days and is degenerating toward what may well be its worst. Yet what hope remains is no less precious nor any less worthy of being preserved.

First of all, the day-to-day life of most Americans in these times is nowhere near as dire as that of the band of cold, ragged and hungry men who gathered around George Washington in the winter at Valley Forge, to which they had been driven by defeat after defeat.

Only the most reckless gambler would have bet on them to win. Only an optimist would have expected them to survive.

Against the background of those and other desperate times that this country has been through, we cannot whine today because the stocks in our pension plans have gone down or the inflated value that our houses had just a few years ago has now evaporated.

In another sense, however, looming ahead of us — and our children and their children — are dangers that can utterly destroy American society. Worse yet, there are moral corrosions within ourselves that weaken our ability to face the challenges ahead.

60% of use hate Congress (I thought it was more, since the approval ratings were in the teens or under?) but we re-elect the same scoundrels. It’s the old syndrome - we hate Congress, but “my own Congresscritter is A-OK!”

Yup - MY guy (can you say Murtha? which shows how pathetic too many people truly are) is OK; it’s the rest who are bums!

Maddening thing is these idiots at election time thought Congress was Republican-controlled!

Thanks for the ping jaz.

I’m glad the RQSR isn’t the recipient of all those emails and faxes. I’m depressed enough spending time here at FR, and reading about what the inmates of the asylum are doing now, and next.

They have to be stopped now. I don’t know how, but they have to be stopped. Can’t wait until 2010.

there are 800 posts on a Oscars thread here, worshipful of the same Hollywood that is undermining our morals?

Almost all of the posts on that thread condemned Hollywood and the movies, saying that they haven't and wouldn't see any movies or the Oscar show!

All of my posts did, but there was enough worship to be noticeable.

The degeneration will only get worse if we cannot find a way to keep welfare deadbeats from voting.

YES!!

That is what must happen to take the country back. Take comfort in the knowledge that most of your neighbors and fellow Americans voted your way, in spite of an American media holding up a looking glass to you and the world of an America enamored of its president. The image in the mirror is false, a lie.

There are so many deadly moral failings at the root of this; envy and its offshoot "they were greedy!" is immoral and contributes to malaise. It is immoral to enable deadbeats; it goes against the Judeo-Christian ethic. Charity is very different from catering full-time self-indulgence and sloth by force from the labor of others. There's a reason it's against the ethic -- it results in bad stuff. It is not just a moral issue, it is a specifically Judeo-Christian moral issue. Ordinary "moralists" will find a way to justify anything, and welfare is one.

Those guys around George Washington at Valley Forge may have been freezing and tattered, but they came from a long tradition of doing right by the Judeo-Christian ethic, and thriving as a result. This IS the ethic that forced slavery out of the West, not even half a century later.

It is the ethic we must make a conscious decision to live by and fight for if we want to survive.

I put it right around the time of the assassination of the Gracchi, myself.

Still looking for Marius.

That is probably about right.......

“A couple more vote cycles decided by welfare voters will sink America once and for all.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

A couple more? If you took a .30-06 round between the eyes from five feet would it take “a couple more” to do you in? Is your name Monte Python? This is it pal, the next election will be an EINO (election in name only)! Those who keep talking about the 2010 election delivering us are living in fantasy.
The year 2000 was the year when all the terrible things that were supposed to happen didn’t, this is the year when all the awful things that sounded so absurd that they couldn’t possibly happen...do happen.

Don’t look now, but the Marius legions rule the Capitol!

The heavy tramp of Sulla approaches. Not a good thing, but a necessary thing.

imo. ;^)

Over the years, we have had our share of miraculous deliverances. But that our fate today depends on yet another miracle is what can turn pessimism to despair.

Sowell's right - that we must count on it - not hope for it - but MUST count on a miracle...

Today, we submit. We pay our taxes no matter how grievous, and without that money the government could not oppress us.

Isn't ironic that the rallying cry of the American Revolution was "No taxation without representation"!

The British taxes on the American colonies were minuscule, not anything like the taxes we pay today with all our elected American representatives.

>> Sowell: “If we are still made of sterner stuff than it looks like, then it might take two or maybe even three or four nuclear bombs, but we will surrender.”

Surrender to whom and to what end? God forbid such an attack, but I think survival would trump surrender.

Heavy, heavy article.

So he predicts that we surrender, does that mean sharia law would take over?

HOP is right Philo. These Marians are all over DC. The “civil war” started with Bush with his soft on borders stance (essentially extending a hand to the Latins outside the borders of “Rome”).

And now worse than Bush is in the WH looking to give more than amnesty; may extend citizenship to the Latins (and canucks? — hey HOP, would you still like that? LOL)

Sulla would be a bad thing. Sad: he’d never have appeared but for Marius’s excesses. Why bad? Those who back our Marius are expecting to gain from Sulla too.

Perhaps you grock my tagline.

Yes, that is heavy stuff.

I would like to think survival would trump surrender with the vast majority but not so sure now with many in the country.

I wonder if he might be referring to a surrender of the sort that’s taking place in Europe now or maybe a more accelerated one that would incorporate sharia law here, God forbid that should ever happen too.

I downloaded a copy of ‘The 5,000 Year Leap’, recommended by Glenn Beck, about appreciating the founding fathers and the Constitution, and had tears in my eyes as I read the beginning chapters.
