Ex-assemblyman pushes plan to split California into two states

The revolution will begin in Visalia – and it will be led by a man named Maze.

As in Bill Maze, a termed-out Assembly member turned rebel who is pushing for California to split in two: the conservative interior as one state and the liberal coast as another.

"We're looking at establishing a breakaway state," he said, with a new government and a new capital. "We'd actually be creating a 51st state."

He is tapping into the anger of farmers and others who say environmental rules and high taxes are sending the state into a tailspin.

"Citizens of our once 'Golden State' are frustrated and desperately concerned about the imposition of burdensome regulations, taxation, fees, fees and more fees, and bureaucratic intrusion into our daily lives and businesses," declares downsizeca.org, the movement's Web site.

Under Maze's plan, 13 coastal counties from Los Angeles to Marin would split from the remaining 45 counties, which the Web site calls "the new revitalized California." To promote the idea, Maze has established a nonprofit group called Citizens for Saving California Farming Industries.

Meanwhile, Maze is selling the plan up and down the state, appearing on television and radio shows. With enough money and momentum, he hopes to put the question before the state's voters. According to the U.S. Constitution, Congress and the state Legislature would have to sign off.

Californians have tried to parcel the state 27 times before, with most attempts never getting far off the ground, said former Republican Assemblyman Stan Statham, who made the last serious attempt in the early 1990s.

The most famous secession movement came in 1941, when several counties in Northern California and southern Oregon tried to form the State of Jefferson – until World War II intervened.

Texas is authorized by the Treaty of Annexation to split into up to five states.

If they were smart, they could have 10 senators and up to four more congressmen.

Thirds all right, but with very different boundaries. The coast should be in two pieces, divided somewhere between San Luis Obispo and Cambria, extending inland to the divide between the Central Valley and the coastal watersheds.

There would be downsides. I can't see how one could reasonably separate San Bernardino from LA. Sorry Salinas; it's gotta suck to be stuck with Santa Cruz.

Inasmuch as it would be great for California conservatives to have a state again, the net result would be plus 2 liberal senators. I'm afraid the inland state would suffer the same consequences as the flyover states, haltered by the Federal boot on their necks. At least they'd get to flush Sacramento!

We’d be better off with a North CA (SF and north), Central CA (coast, farmlands and mountains) and South CA (everything grapevine and south). We could have at least two conservative states out of three.

Should have done it years ago when they first talked about it... heck, we might still live there if they had.

There was a proposal a while back, to cut the State into three pieces, a North, a South, and a somewhat isolated Central Coast comprised of Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara (and Ventura?) counties which would have been called "the Emerald Empire".

DOA of course, but I sort-of liked my section being cut off from some of the others. Politically though, SLO County has as much or more in common with Kern than it does with either liberal democRAT infested Monterey, and (particularly) Santa Barbara Counties. That was until the last election cycle...in which SLO County went 'rat in the presidential election, same as most of the rest of the Coast.

I'd bet that city-by-city Paso Robles might have remained Republican. Most of the out-lying rural folks county-wide, do not vote 'rat, which is why the County has been [Lois] Capps-o-mandered, splitting the city of SLO off from much of the rest of the County, lumping it in with her home turf of Santa Barbara, leaving much of the balance of the County grouped with Kern for U.S. Representative Districts.

San Diego is the largest city in the U.S. with a Republican Mayor.

3 of our 5 congressmen are conservative Republicans

In one thing at least, you are mistaken.

Splitting off from liberals localises targets.

"We're looking at establishing a breakaway state," he said, with a new government and a new capital. "We'd actually be creating a 51st state."

Not without Congress' approval.

Splitting off from liberals localises targets.

There's some truth in that, but we'll never get to have that battle in such a perfect format. I'm afraid we're just going to have to use our keen senses and intellects to spot them.

That should, of course, read ''liberty'', not ''libery''.

My apols for the typo!

and the rest becomes SIERRA REPUBLIC!!!

Or Sierra California (including much of the valleys)- has a nice 'ring' to it!

Those not living in big cities along the coast are the whipping boys, I tell 'ya. How population density holds sway over the rest of the state is mind boggling. Build a slum, rule the state. What a country.

ps. Rain dance not coming along so good, need Golden or Bald Eagle feathers, pronto- Tonto.

California should be divided into North California and South California with the division at Santa Maria. If the south should unilaterally declare herself free, we could reject the Sacramento budget and Arnold. We could select a conservative interim Governor. We need a good conservative like maybe Jon Voit. Then we could start from scratch with a conservative government (even if we have Hollywood in the state).
We should make the declaration of independence on April First! A fitting day for a new state.
