Where's global warming?
Boston Globe ^ | March 8, 2009 | Jeff Jacoby

SUPPOSE the climate landscape in recent weeks looked something like this:

Half the country was experiencing its mildest winter in years, with no sign of snow in many Northern states. Most of the Great Lakes were ice-free. Not a single Canadian province had had a white Christmas. There was a new study discussing a mysterious surge in global temperatures - a warming trend more intense than computer models had predicted. Other scientists admitted that, because of a bug in satellite sensors, they had been vastly overestimating the extent of Arctic sea ice.

If all that were happening on the climate-change front, do you think you'd be hearing about it on the news? Seeing it on Page 1 of your daily paper? Would politicians be exclaiming that global warming was even more of a crisis than they'd thought? Would environmentalists be skewering global-warming "deniers" for clinging to their skepticism despite the growing case against it?

No doubt.

But it isn't such hints of a planetary warming trend that have been piling up in profusion lately. Just the opposite.

The United States has shivered through an unusually severe winter, with snow falling in such unlikely destinations as New Orleans, Las Vegas, Alabama, and Georgia. On Dec. 25, every Canadian province woke up to a white Christmas, something that hadn't happened in 37 years. Earlier this year, Europe was gripped by such a killing cold wave that trains were shut down in the French Riviera and chimpanzees in the Rome Zoo had to be plied with hot tea. Last week, satellite data showed three of the Great Lakes - Erie, Superior, and Huron - almost completely frozen over. In Washington, D.C., what was supposed to be a massive rally against global warming was upstaged by the heaviest snowfall of the season, which paralyzed...

The comments are interesting.

Mostly of the “Ignore that man behind the curtain” variety.

Just wait until the 4th of July. I predict that any random heat wave this summer will be touted as evidence of global warming having arrived.

Don’t get me started! I have been arguing with these nuts for the last ten years. Heck, what do I know, I’m just a Chemical Engineer with thirty years experience arguing with Liberal Arts majors who can’t multiply two numbers together and come up with a consistent answer (even using a calculator).

Yes Mr. “the science has been proven” Gore. You should be in a cell with Bernie Madoff.

This whole Globalll Worming and Cooling now is reffered to as Climate Change. Change of a name means more change in their pockets.

What a great way to get the Chicken Little's to scream the SKY IS FALLING!

Guess the Modern Education system has neglected to teach a generation or so about Geological history of the Earth.

Cap and Trade BS is only taking Taxed money and giving it to ALGORE!

Maybe someone needs to get on the fast track and 4 times a year as the Seasons change start screaming CLIMATE change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SHEEZE a generation of Idiots!

Even the skeptics of global warming still bring in the CO2 as a problem comment. I just don’t get it. CO2 is NOT a problem. It is PLANT FOOD! It has nothing, zero, zip to do with climate change, warming, cooling or anything else other than being a trace gas in the atmosphere and something we exhale with every breath. I get so depressed when I see people who sound intelligent and reasonable about the so-called “climate change-global warming crises” say things about CO2 as a given “pollutant” I want to cry. It is so depressing. We can never make any progress if we give ground on such fundamental issues.

There is no doubt CO2 is a greenhouse gas. At some level it would start to be a major problem and contribute to planetary warming.

Where the warmists go off track is their assumption that they know exactly where that point is and exactly how a given change will affect the climate. They also assume that all factors will provide positive feedback, while the somewhat limited evidence is that negative feedback is at least as strong.

I think it is irrresponsible to say that CO2 is not and can never be a hazard, regardless of what levels it attains. But it is at least as irresponsible to destroy the world’s economy to act out a response to a poorly supported theory.

I’m ready for the first day of summer in L.A. That’s usually the time Algore goes on his full-blown insanity rant that the summer heat is due Glo-Bull Warming.
