Science Prevails (uh, OK)
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Tuesday, March 10, 2009

The era of stem cells has officially begun.

It's a little late, of course - it could have started eight years ago, when then-President Bush had the opportunity to approve federal funding for new embryonic stem cell research. Instead, he signed an executive order that restricted funding to a handful of existing stem cell lines, tying the hands of scientists for years to come. It was the first sign of the battle to come between the Bush administration, science and ideology.

KEYWORDS: bho44; bhoscience; bhostemcells; obama; stemcell
Not that these things are totally unique to this article, but notice

(1a) the fake distinction between "science" and "ideology," which is crucial to the argument (which is presumed, not made here) that OF COURSE Good Science, when it comes to embryonic stem cells, means dismissing any ethical questions as ideological crackpottery

(1b) Bush is "ideological," and Obama is not!

(2) the focus in this article on some financial issues, the discussion of which also depends on accepting that OF COURSE everything "stem cell" is Good

(3) the comments

If anyone here picks up a physical copy of this newspaper, please tell us if A-10 is editorial/opinion or not. This website's navigational element points to a "Science" section instead.

Obama is an ideologue who willingly ignores the lessons that the science of economics could teach him.

These people are idiots. Just because there wasn’t federal funding doesn’t mean there wasn’t ESCR going on - it just wasn’t federally funded. Don’t they realize the lack of private financing tells them something? Maybe ESCR is not economically viable?? If ESCR was this “great savior” for medicine, then private capital would have been there long ago. ESC have shown little promise and it is promoted as an ideological issue to please the abortion lobby.

Democrat Science says that Embryonic Stem Cell research is the key to miracle cures.

Real Science says that Embryonic Stem Cells have proven to be unstable an unsuitable for any therapeutic purpose, and Adult Stem Cells are far more therapeutically useful.

Democrat Science says that the Earth is warming because of excess CO2 in the atmosphere.

Real Science says that the Earth is getting cooler for the past ten years, and that CO2 has no direct effect on temperature.

Democrat Science says that secondhand smoke is a Class A carcinogen, so all sorts of public smoking restrictions are justified.

Real Science has never demonstrated a correlation between secondhand smoke and cancer.

You don’t get it. In the minds of liberals, only activities paid for with tax money actually exist. For example, in their world, there is no such thing as private charity. Hence, their charge that the United States is not a very charitable nation: they ignore the billions in private charity because it isn’t charity by their definition. Seriously, in their eyes, if the government isn’t funding it, it doesn’t exist.

In this article they did admit there is state funded money for embryonic stem cell research. I believe there are more states other than California that funded embryonic stem cell research.

Now that does not include any private money or research done by other countries such as those in Europe and Asia. So far I have not heard a word of any news from embryonic stem cell research. All the positive news has been from others forms of stem cell research.

I despise the media.

Thanks for pointing out that part here (I was focusing on the ethical issues). Notice how this piece begins "the era of stem cells has officially begun." :þ

How about a little separation of ‘Science and State’.

As my brother puts it, government funding of this type of research is nothing more than white-collar welfare. The libs are no longer satisfied with the entitlement slavery of the poor, now they want the middle class too.

I noticed that Obambi made a huge point of emphasizing that he would never allow “human cloning” in any way.

That’s good, but what is the BASIS for his resolve?

Does he have a moral and/or “ideological” opposition to human cloning?

What, you mean he allows his “moral” predilections to drive his “political” choices for what is allowable for SCIENTIFIC research?????

Gee, it seems that Obambi is just another ideologue......

More than that, there WAS federal funding. It just wasn't AS extensive as it is now. This person is a moron. Probably thinks on Obama's inauguration day the seas began to recede and Al-Qaeda began to turn in their weapons.

Like global warming and the Mars rock scam of some years ago, escr is peddled by snake oil salesmen in lab coats in order to shake down the suckers in government.

But if you swap the words “stem cell research” for “global warming research” you will find that there is NOTHING but political hype and extreme prejudice going on under Obama - and the rest of the MSM “science” establishment - who were scouring and yelling for funds.

And getting them - despite the “bad science” in the global warming community.

YOu are quite right, except for one relatively minor point. Non-embryonic stem cell research has been federally funded all along, and I believe Pres. Bush supported increased funding for same.
One wonders why the MSM has been so reluctant to publicize the efforts, and the results achieved, by scientists searching for medical remedies or cures using non-embryonic stem cells. Or perhaps to ask the question is to answer it.

Scientific facts alone cannot determine whether something is moral or immoral. It tells us how things are, but what about what we out to do? Science cannot tell us what we should do. “Ideology,” a.k.a. ethical sanity can. This is one of the reasons people like saying that “science does not say X is immoral.” That’s because science factoids alone cannot say that ANYTHING is immoral. Immoral people have nothing to fear from science alone.

Even when science shows that human life begins at conception and that clear signs of the baby’s humanity are seen in the womb, going from this to a Pro-life position gets one tarred and feathered by Obama as “ideologue.” Factoids are not enough.

We know that cannibalism is immoral, even though from a health perspective it is not so different from beef. Is this a taboo/ideology, Obama?

When Obama says “facts not ideology,” he really means “no ethical considerations allowed.”

Scientific imperialism is an ideology, and a VERY DANGEROUS ONE.

Trans-humanism is an ideology, and a VERY DANGEROUS ONE.

Brave New World indeed...
