WASHINGTON — The Navy has assigned a heavily armed destroyer to escort the U.S. surveillance ship that got into a high-seas confrontation with Chinese ships last weekend.

A defense official says the Pearl Harbor-based destroyer Chung-Hoon is keeping a close eye on the unarmed sub-hunting ship Impeccable as it continues operations in the South China Sea. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe sensitive ship movements.

The official says the escort ship joined the Impeccable on Wednesday.

An armed escort for our guys in the South China Sea..named after a Chinese-American war hero.

Beautiful.

Kudos to whoever it was at the Pentagon or Pacific Fleet HQ that thought that one up.

The story on that is that the Chinese sub, a diesel electric, had been absolutely tagged, bracketed, and was forced to surface.

If a carrier group were escorting the ship, all that noise would make it extremely difficult to find subs.

Actually, if three or four Chinese agressor warships simply blew up with no air ordinance expended...then we would most definitely know.

Looking at the stats I just noticed that this DD is the size of an early WWII heavy cruiser. Seems odd to designate such a large ship as a DD.

I believe in getting right to the point and demonstrating overwhelming, unapproachable force to begin with.

The Chinese are not capable of contending with an entire carrier strike group on short notice in a situation like this.

It can be argued, that with one DDG, we are increasing the chance that they would respond...because they can.

But that's just my opinion and thoughts.

"It is operated by the Military Sea-lift Command (MSC) and is manned principally by civilians.

Although, they're technically civilians, I would wager that a good percentage are either prior-service or fully retired military.

I have very mixed feelings about the move throughout the '90's and well into this century to place civilians in billets that were previously handled by military personnel. I understand the cost saving nature of such policies, but I wonder if we don't lose effectiveness and overall competency in mission capabilities.

Now, how do we know this whole debacle wasn’t set up to make zero look tough in handling the ChiComs? They have the damn Secretary of State in their pocket why would they instigate anything?

Oh, the carrier would stand well off, and only a single DDG would be anywhere close...and still far enough away for the Impeccable to Charlie Mike.

But a LOT of help would be close at hand that could easily overpower anything the PLAN could sortie.

A single DDG alone could be overwhelmed with what the PLAN has in the area.

They would be foolish to do so...but why even take the chance when you can punctuate your insistance that free passage will be maintained with maximum force if necessary.
