Pope: Condoms 'Increase' AIDS Epidemic in Africa

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE —

Pope Benedict XVI said Tuesday that the distribution of condoms is not the answer in the fight against AIDS in Africa.

Benedict has never before spoken explicitly on condom use although he has stressed that the Roman Catholic Church is in the forefront of the battle against AIDS. The Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.

"You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms," the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane headed to Yaounde, Cameroon. "On the contrary, it increases the problem."

Some priests and nuns working with victims of the AIDS pandemic ravaging Africa question the church's opposition to condoms.

The pope also said that he intends to make an appeal for "international solidarity" for Africa in the face of the global economic downturn.

He said that while the church does not propose specific economic solutions, it can give "spiritual and moral" suggestions.

Describing the current crisis as the consequence of "a deficit of ethics in economic structures," the pope said, "It is here that the church can make a contribution."

Benedict's seven-day pilgrimage will take him to Cameroon and Angola.

Africa is the fastest-growing region for the Roman Catholic Church.

Would you have sex with a full blown AIDS patient who is wearing a condom, or you wearing a condom, which ever the case may be?

Here's a different way to look at it. If you lived in Minnesota, would you equip your house with winter storm windows, or winter storm screens?

"1. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Africa has increased since distribution of condoms started."

"Your point? The prevalence of HIV/AIDS has also increased since the time video games, internet, and Starbucks became mainstream. By using your ‘logic’, they must be responsible for it."

LOL, by using your 'logic' somebody must have been sending Starbucks and video games to Africa to fight AIDS, and not condoms. As for me, I just like the truth, and detest that which is designed to steer people away from it, as your absolutely STUPID reply attempts to do.

Look, here's how it works, here is an analogy that might help you. I keep trying to inform you of the facts, of the truth. You keep missing it and remain in your ignorance. Therefore, the facts can't enlighten everyone, just as condoms can't protect everyone. But unlike the US government's failed condom program, I will not continue wasting my time to fight your ignorance. Have a nice day, now go have relations with an std ridden partner, and don't forget your condom.

You can hand out all the condoms you want, but Islamic Jihad rape squads won’t use them.

They are the ones who will laugh at you.

How is it not accurate?

(P1) People living in areas with a high concentrations of HIV+ people have a higher probability of contracting a disease than those who live in areas with low concentrations of HIV+ people.

(P2) People who do not practice safe sex face a greater risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease than those who do practice safe sex.

(P3) Condoms, when used correctly, significantly lower the chance of contracting/spreading a sexually transmitted disease during intercourse.

(P4) Catholics living in Africa live in an area with a higher concentration of HIV+ people.

(P5) Catholics are prohibited from practicing safe sex/using condoms

(C) Therefore, Catholics living in areas with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, who are forbidden from using condoms, are far more likely to contract HIV/AIDS

There is a difference between how things are and how things ought to be.

“So Okay, I’m not sure how distributing condoms contributes to the increasing incidents of the disease.”

Think of it the same way as it relates to pregnancy.

People feel “protected” when they wear a condom to prevent a pregnancy, so they engage in sexual activity when otherwise they might not. In fact - they may engage in quite alot of sexual activity while relying on this method of prevention.
Except - condoms have a failure rate - and the more you engage in the activity - the more your chances increase for being one of those “failures.”

You failed to answer my question, but I will answer yours.

Yes, if I were to have sex with a person who has HIV/AIDS, I would only do so wearing a condom.

I was using absurdity to point out that correlation does not equal causation.

Obviously you missed that or are incapable of understanding it.

“I forget which country it is — Nigeria? — that took the “keep it in your pants” approach and rebuffed UN attempts to condomize. IIRC, they are the only African nation that has seen a decrease in AIDS/HIV.”

Bingo.
But so many people get their kicks out of pope bashing they don’t want facts to get in the way.

(P5) Catholics are prohibited from practicing safe sex/using condoms

False, at least twice. Not only in the matter of the prohibition, but also in the false assumption that use of a condom constitutes "safe sex."

So, if the Islamic Rape Squads go and assault someone’s wife and infect them wit HIV/AIDS, should the husband leave his wife, have sex with her without a condom and contract HIV, or stay with his wife, use a condom, and be as vigilant as possible doing his best to maintain both his marriage and his health?

So Catholics are allowed to use condoms now?

And the term “safe sex” refers to using a condom, not meaning that it will protect a person, 100% of the time, from contracting a disease.

...but I will answer yours.

You have not yet.

He asked you if you would, you answered with how you would if you did, leaving unanswered the question of whether you would.

So Catholics are allowed to use condoms now?

I did not say that.

And the term “safe sex” refers to using a condom... falsely.

Yes, if I was married to a person that contracted HIV from something besides infidelity, I would still have sex with them but would do everything I could to protect my health

No "yes if," just yes or no:

Would you have sex with a full blown AIDS patient who is wearing a condom, or you wearing a condom, which ever the case may be?

Simple stuff.

Would the term ‘safer sex’ work better for you, since it has been *PROVEN* that the use of condoms decreases the likelihood of catching a STD across the board?

I already answered it with a “Yes” and defined the case in which I would do it.

Are you that dense?
