Senate reviewing how college football picks No. 1

WASHINGTON (AP) — Everyone from President Barack Obama on down to fans has criticized how college football determines its top team. Now senators are getting off the sidelines to examine antitrust issues involving the Bowl Champion Series.

The current system "leaves nearly half of all the teams in college football at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to qualifying for the millions of dollars paid out every year," the Senate Judiciary's subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights said in a statement Wednesday announcing the hearings.

Well, it's not like there's anything important going on in the country.

Is it possible to be any more disgusted, disillusioned and disappointed in my government than I am now and have been for the last 5 months??? I'd laugh if it weren't so damned sad.

Actually, that would be a good idea, but they’re in the attic and my doctor (not to mention my husband) doesn’t want me to climb ladders.

I was thinking of the kitchen counters!

In one way I agree with others that the BCS system should be the least of congressional worries. However, there are two things. First, practically every stadium and team is funded with taxpayer money, and they are definitely involved in interstate commerce, so yeah, Congress has every right to look into it. Second, small schools and schools that aren't traditional power houses do get screwed, and in ways that probably violate anti-trust laws.

Fire the lot of them (Legislative, Executive, Judicial) and start over. This is nuts.

In all fairness, they weren’t the only ones complaining about the BCS - Utah WAS undefeated and under estimated - they went on to beat Alabama, who had been ranked #1 almost the entire season - USC had one bad game, or was whipped by an underdog but dominated their admittedly weak division - they did look good though - they were underranked according to some.

Sorry, I have to disagree with most of the comments here.

Considering the damage Congress is doing to the country, I hope they spend the next year dealing with a college football playoff.

Every moment spent on this issue is a moment they are not tearing down the fabric of the USA.

Yea, your picture is oh so appropriate.

But then to our Senate this is important work for the people. If the mob thinks the circus is broken how can they be kept under control.

I’d recommend you ask your husband to get them out of the attic. You never know when you’re going to need one these days.

Yes, I should. Tomorrow is our oldest daughter’s 18th birthday; he could take her to the gun range, like my father did when I turned 18!

In the name of all that is good and right, WTH is wrong with the idiots in Washington???

My dog leaves “presents” in my yard with more acumen and character.

(He’s a very fabulous dog, btw)

Maybe it's time we took the YMCA soccer program approach to college sports, and quit keeping score... Or, the only competition between schools would be debate teams and battle-bots for the science departments.

How un-progressive of you. For one thing, debate would mean there is one right side and one wrong side and someone is dissenting against the right side. All that would mean is that the wrong side can't concentrate and a special camp would need to be made to help them learn that. As for battle bots.. you warmonger!!!!

“Eliminate the championship, give every team a ‘participation’ trophy and all is well.”

Your proposal is a start, but does not go far enough. We must enact legislation prohibiting keeping track of the score at all college football games.

Have you ever seen how sad, frustrated and demoralized the “losers” are? Can imagine how badly this is damaging the young mens’ self-esteem?

Franky, Annie, I’d rather have them arguing about football, the NCAA final four, American Idol, and Hannah Montana for the next 4 years than lift a finger to pass any legislation at all.

AMEN to that. In fact, I'd gladly help pitch in to pay the whole lot of them, starting with the Messiah, to take the rest of the year off (at least our lives and property would be safe for a while).

On second thought, legislation would take too long. We need the Supreme Court to forbid all scorekeeping.

After all, doesn’t the 14th Amendment guarantee that all sporting events end in a tie?

Well, that's important.

At least this is more benign than conscripting people from six to ninety to march around in uniforms and proclaim their devotion to "the leader."

LOL! Exactly!

PS: Hannah Montana must be stopped!

This might be the first time the Senate makes a decision with which blacks really are “hardest hit!”
