Fargo Flees as Flood Waters Top All-Time High

Fargo police ordered mandatory evacuations early Friday after a breach in flood protection created a "significant leak" as the Red River topped 40 feet, breaking a record crest set in 1897.

Fargo police Capt. Tod Dahle says the evacuation was ordered shortly after 2 a.m. Friday for all homes in an area south of downtown Fargo. Officers knocked on doors and the city used a phone system to alert residents of the threat.

Authorities say there is an immediate threat of rising flood water. Residents are being told to head west. Emergency shelter is available at a high school.

The river, which flows south-to-north, rose to 40.15 feet early Friday — an all-time high — on the way to its projected crest of up to 43 feet by Saturday afternoon.

Take care Fargo...can't imagine the blizzard we had yesterday being followed by catastrophic flooding...

You might want to consider banning Algore from the entire state...

Has the President done anything about this, besides trying to blame this on global warming? He actually had the nerve to specifically blame blizzards on global warming!

I guess it is the same logic that leads him to think he can reduce the deficit by unprecedented increases in borrowing and spending.

If he does offer any aid to ND, I would urge the residents to reject it. It will certainly come with strings attached. Get $500 to help pay for repairs and be forced to spend $50,000 to make your home more “green”.

Has he gone or does he plan to go and visit the affected area? Probably not, he doesn't seem to care about those of us in flyover country. I'm not a Bush fan but he would be up there visiting the area (maybe not yet though), we'll see if 0 goes.

Prayers for those affected.

Where is FEMA? Where are the free plastic charge cards? I see no camping trailers. It must be true, Obama hates whites!

Fargo is very white. White folks get the short end of the aid-stick when it comes to natural disasters. Look for Obama to host a party tonight.

Luckily, white areas do generally well on their own. That pesky guns and religion thing. Prayers for the folks fighting the flood waters.

o Pets will NOT be accepted at the Red Cross shelter. Animal shelter may be available at the Doggy Depot (3224 8th Street South, 218-236-DOGS) and the Mutt Hut (1214 Main Avenue, 218-236-9935). Call ahead; please bring your animal’s food and health records. Pet shelter space is extremely limited, so please try to make accommodations with family or friends outside of the flood zone.

That was one problem with Katrina and other natural disasters where excavations can save lives. For many people, especially retired singles without family nearby, a pet is their only companionship. Losing both their home and their companion is very traumatic. It would be a lot easier to conduct evacuations if the Red Cross, other NGO agencies and government emergency departments put into their plans separate shelters for those with pets.

I don’t think Obozo has yet to visit the area affected by the severe ice storm (KY, Arkansas).
